    2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road
Hi everyone, I'm a brand new member to this forum and also a first time owner of a Tacoma, specifically a 2020 TRD OR. Im quite the newbie when it comes to cars, my previous vehicle was a Honda Civic. Having moved recently to Montana I wanted to purchase a truck and had my sights on a Tacoma TRD OR. So now that I have it, the builds I see on here look overwhelming. I do want to eventually do some off roading and multi day camping but I don't know where to start when it comes to modding. Is there a good way to start, like upgrading the lights first, then armor and so on. Winter is practically here already so I won't be needing any crazy stuff until mid spring hits. Would love any input and advice if possible.

Personally If I were to do it all over again I wouldve just got sliders, front and rear bumper armor and a winch, and a compressor, everything else is useles the light bars, ditch lights, snorkels, awning all useless

That's what I'm worried about, spending way too much on lights but the armor looks important and possibly lifting the truck. What about racks for either the roof or bed?

A lift is one mod you will need a 2-3” lift, I have a shell in my bed imstead of a rtt, I would say get a softopper imstead of a rtt or a shell, my shell has a rack on the top I never really use it, I just attached an awning on the rack and I honestly only used it like 2 times in over a year, the only reason I have the rack is for if my traction boards get REALLY dirty and I dont want to put them in the bed and I strap them on tje top, i started with a overland build then got tired of all the dirt roads and jpgonestly you want a capable rig that can go anywhere

    Welcome to the forum.

Try driving your rig for a while first. See what you do, how you drive, and what you like. That will help determine your needs. When you decide to buy something, wait 72 hours. If you still want it 72 hours later, buy it. Let the truck impress you with what it can do. Don't try to impress with your truck.

I'm involved in emergency response so my truck and gear is geared more for urban issues. Plus, I regularly empty the bed and use the truck to haul stuff. When I do leave mother macadam, the usual surface is a dirt road, often packed dirt. Rarely am I on a (2-wheel) track. But I'm equipped to go where I want to go when I want to get there. I don't have the truck or confidence to climb rocks, so I don't need a lift, onboard compressor, etc. I have a shell because I can sleep in the back if I want instead of erecting a tent. Thus, my mods are few--installed a front skid plate, upgraded the back-up lights, mounted running boards, put in a bed mat, and got some Cooper AT3s. But if you get stuck, I've got the gear to snatch/tow you out, radio for help, chop the tree or use the come along to go to it, etc. :)
