3rd Gen Magnuson Supercharger Review & Discussion

Hey guys, I made a quick video about my 3rd gen Magnuson Supercharger on my 2018 TRD OR M/T. My camera angles and quality are certainly less than Tacoma Beast and YotaMafia's videos, but I did not loudly overdub music onto it so maybe that makes up for my $45 camera lol.

edit: caught one little error. I meant Charge air cooler "CAC", not intercooler. They are different things

Still loving the kit. Thought I’d add a bit of performance data. Using my OBD fusion app I’ve gathered the following data. Note: these weren’t taken on a drag strip. Just random asphalt roads when I’ve had a chance over the past few months
Number of runs: 8
Average 0-60mph 7.1 seconds
Best 0-60 6.38 seconds (the launch is everything this truck has terrible axle hop)
Average quarter mile 15.2 seconds at 92.3 mph
Best quarter mile 14.81 seconds at 94.4mph (this run I hit all the shifts just right and my 60’ was way better than usual)

overall I’m very happy with the results. It does seem like some gears are max throttle limited which is killing me after some shifts. This thing would do 14s and 6 sec flat 0-60 easy all day with a traction bar and a good clutch I think.

before this kit I was getting an average of high 7s to low 8s 0-60mph on the same roads. I can’t remember what my quarter miles were for sure.

Thank you! I drove a MT Tacoma with OV Tune 2.0 a few months ago, but I decided to not buy it because I knew I would end up getting a supercharger. I didn't feel like the OV tune made much performance change except for the fantastic smoothing out of the acoustic valve transition area (That alone made me consider buying it lol).

i appreciate your video. and we're not too far from each other. I'm not throwing any negativity at you here, just my impression, but my truck really appears to pull much harder than yours in 1st & 2nd. I'd be curious to compare in person at some point. hard to tell from vids as you mentioned. but I'm only interested in correcting the anemic low rpm and pre-advanced driveability and power delivery, since that's where the excitement is for me. this doesn't show improvement there it appears. my truck is corrected with that. but yeah, vids y'know..

That kit really looks great & any performance gains for the Tacoma is a win. Up until now we really haven't had anything but OVT which I've considered.

@OpelGT Have you looked into RIPP coil packs? I think they might be a good addition to the kit if you can still get to them that is

 

I have looked at them, but in my experience working on cars coil packs and such only support the reliability of a specific tune or help at very rpms. I’ve never seen a real HP increase from them, but I have seen smoother idling and less misfires at high rpms.

the stock Tacoma coils are more than enough and In my opinion, the RIPP coil packs have no real affect on HP despite their claimed 18HP gains. I just don’t believe it until I see some independent dyno results from the same air temp and same tune.

I would agree by themselves & pricepoint I doubt they would be worth it but as a supporting mod they might be a good bolt on

 

Good news is since you already have vf tune you might be able to take it to a dyno tuner and get them to up the Power of the SC a bit!
I was talking with a guy earlier to today that did that. He got 315HP (from 215 stock) at the wheels after another shop tuned. I think a Bascoma dynoed his stock magnuson tune at 308HP. Doesn’t sound like much difference but I’ll take every bit I can from the stock pulley

of course I’m broke now so I’m not buying vf tuner to grab that extra 7HP

 

I though we get vf with the kit to download the Magnuson tune.
Only it is blocked.?

 

I need to send OVTune a message about that. I have a registry file now, so I believe I have access to the Tacoma tunes if I buy the $199 software and tune pack.

Magnuson is a VF tuner pro users so their proprietary tune is locked. It’s their intellectual property. Would be nice if they would give it to us as a base line to edit right!?

 

only wish you were driving the AT and not MT. Magnuson's failure is the shifting logic - which does not exist in the MT. Hope they get this figured out as they have VFT software and even a Caveman can do it! Thanks for the post. Jealous. I am a VFT tuner user so maybe send me the tune and I can verify it is locked.. shame on Magnuson for not finishing the job and fixing the AT shifting logic!

 

FWIW, Mat says the Toyota coils are some of the best OEM coils out there. Your return on aftermarket coils might not be as great as you think. This is what I recall, so it might be worth a check.

The mag charger only comes with a flash license so that you can flash the tune. It does not come with VF.

My comments based on my truck with the SC with automatic trans, 4.88 gears, 33" e-rated tires, steel bumpers, and a cap. Trailer is a 1700lb pop-up. I previously had OVT 2.0 flashed to the truck before installing the SC.

I put about 300 miles on mine over the weekend towing my camper from SLC to Evanston and then up in to the mountains. Towing mountain passes (9k ft) with a 30mph headwind it would still drop to 4th to maintain 75mph. But honestly. I would expect that.

Towing on flat ground it would just chug away in 6th.

Now, without a trailer the power is so much better! It will stay in 6th on the highway without even struggling. Whereas without the SC it would drop to 4th to maintain speed. Taking off from the line I can break traction which I could NOT do without the SC. Also it just feels like it wants to go - staying above 1500 rpm makes the truck feel like it has power on tap. This feeling wasn't there until about 3000 rpm without the SC

I've found that driving around town I find it much more enjoyable to use ECT. The tune from Magnuson needs some improvement for sure and the shift patterns need refinement. ECT helps bring the shift patterns closer to what OVT had optimized in 2.0

But all in all this thing integrates so well with the truck that it makes the truck drive like it should have from the factory. My goal with getting the SC was a power adder that felt like it belonged on the truck and was something that is easily maintainable. And even in the event of some sort of a failure in the blower, you pull the belt off and have essentially a stock truck again to limp home.
