Finally found the picture of the 2 different tanks sitting on each other. You can see the difference in the depths of the tank.

Thank you so much for having this information!!! I want to get an 18 gal tank, split it, then weld in a band to get a bigger tank that works like stock. But I was unsure on the bottom half depth design difference.

Check my math but hear me out... you've got an extra height of 1.5" on that 18 gal tank. So I should be able to get an extra 3 gal min. with another 1.5" metal band added between the seems

I've never removed the tank.. how tight is it between the bed and top of tank? Ideally I'd like to lift the tank higher so I can keep about the same ground clearance but add about 6 gal capacity

You can't lift it any higher. The tank straps hold it right up against the crossmembers. Going up is nearly impossible.your best bet is to just go with an 18 gallon tank. It's plug and play.

Just permanently mount a Jerry can in your bed and connect it to the gas tank, boom...23 gallons

I wonder if you did some creative exhaust routing, could you mount a second tank on the passenger side?

Maybe a side exit exhaust? Or through the hood?

Pinto was a fireball because of a bolt that was too long and wod peirce the tank on a rear end collision. So so many vehicles on the road have fuel tanks in that exact same spot from factory

Trophy trucks carry 100 gallons of fuel right at the very rear of the vehicle and they’re getting rear ended every season - just build a very strong bumper and skid protection if you’re going to do that.

I swapped my tank last weekend and the fuel pickup indeed sits on the bottom of the tank. There is even a small witness mark where it sits.

The fuel level float is on an arm that is shorter than the pickup. Probably about 3 gallons left at E.

Also of note, there was an extra baffle spot welded in my old rusty tank that was not present in my donor tank - both 2001 reg cab 4x4's, so some time in the 2001 production this baffle must have been added or removed (not sure production date of donor truck off hand).
