going to pickup a softopper for my truck...not a make or break, but is there any way to mount a fly rod holder on say roof racks above the topper without adding the full cage? Have seen pics of another soft type topper with mounts for racks/crossbars coming out of the top/sides. Driving my wife's 4 runner to fish because I can't mount my rod holder on my taco without a cage or hard top

There isn't really a way to mount anything on top of the softopper itself. You'd have to buy some type of rack to go over it. But I suppose you could open one side and attach it to the frame

Where are the rod holders on the wife's vehicle? I'm not understanding why you would leave your truck home because of this. Won't they fit in the bed? Just asking. I don't fish.

The rod vault mounts on the crossbars on the roof rack of the 4runner. I fish a 10ft fly rod here in CO and nearing $1500 per rod/reel, I have no desire to lean it out the back of the bed when I need to move spots on the river. Sucks to leave the truck at home, but good news is the roads near most of the fishing spots do not require an overly capable 4wd

Stock photo...not my truck, but an example of what I am referencing.

There really isn't a way to mount anything to the outside of the softopper. You could put a roof rack on and let the rods overhang the bed.

Hey @Vandy321 did you find a solution to this? I’m wondering about the exact same thing

3-4 piece fly rod? Take in rod tube disassembled. Assemble when you get to fishing location. Have a nice drink sit on your tailgate and enjoy getting ready to catch some fish

Not ideal for more full time carrying, freeway speeds...etc but I've found that I can use the side straps to hold my fly rods. If you roll up the side panels you can loop the side straps around your rod as well as the side panel. It's worked great for me on our fishing trips where we're basically always on back roads and not really in areas where theft would be a concern. Hasn't been a problem traveling 40-50mph on dirt back roads. I'm confident the rods are secure and not going anywhere when driving. But definitely not secure regarding theft and you have to have the side panels up so definitely doesn't work in all situations.
