So me and a co worker were having a discussion today about the process of parking our manual transmission vehicles. I told him when I park I push the clutch in while in gear, pull the e brake and turn off the car. He then told me the way he does is is neutral, turn off the car, pull the e brake and then put it in gear.

Just curious what your process is for parking your stick shift Tacoma.

They both accomplish the same results... It doesn't matter does it?
In gear, the weight is on the parking brake.

It doesn’t matter but just thought I’d ask.

    his way works
your way would work better if you pulled the e-brake later
pulling the e-brake with foot on clutch wastes time having your pressure plate fingers activated
the more you keep them bent/activated, the sooner it wears out

I shut it off and leave it in first. Never used emergency brake unless on a hill. On a real steep hill turn wheels towards curb.

    It's only Wed.

And you don't specify parking uphill vs downhill or the weather conditions.

    It all matters.

This is what I was taught and always do. IOW the drivetrain isn't wound up. Curious if you guys like @Gen2 Man (just to call you out) are young or old and how long you've been driving sticks. I'm 49 now and been driving them 33 years and in that span have had some clunkers that would pop out of gear. They call them parking brakes after all!

Yup. thats how i do it on my auto, neutral, ebrake on, brakes let up, let truck settle then up into park and it would be how id do it on a manual tool. Leave it in 1st or reverse (what ever gear has the lowest gear ratio), e brake on, brakes off then let the clutch out, that way driveline isnt bound up.

LOL. I had a 1982 Civic that if I wasn't 20 and quick I'd have lost. Not that the parking brake was all that great but the combination was enough to keep it where I left it after that. Then there was the low compression on my 1991 mini truck before I rebuilt it's engine. That was funny to watch it puff-puff-puff slowly downhill each time the #4 cylinder would bleed down if it was the one starting off holding it. Good times.

Well I'm 65 and have been driving since I was 14 years old 95% of that was in manual transmissions. Even in an automatic transmission I always park and leave my foot on the brake pedal, engage the parking brake and then place the shift lever into park. This keeps the weight of the vehicle off of the parking pawl in the transmission.

My clutch switch died so I put in a bypass wire. I hated having to clutch to start it, much happier with it like that.

So, I come to a stop in neutral, lift my foot off the brake, pull the park brake, if a good song is playing I continue rocking, then turn the key off.
