Run Amsoil or Mobil 1 and then switch back?

If I run Amsoil or Mobil 1, and then decide to switch back to regular oil is there going to be any problem . I would like to run synthetic , but I have not done my own oil/filter for years. Does the truck use a standard filter when using Amsoil/Mobil 1? What is the interval for changing out synthetic vs regular oil? Thanks in advance ...Rich

 

you can switch back if you want to, but i think its a good idea to keep something good like amsoil or mobil in your motor. as far as filter goes, its just your basic oil filter with an anti drain back valve. i use a mobil1 filter on mine......as it gets some of the better test reviews out there. also, its ok to go 5k on the change intervals.(especially with synthetic.......not that long with dino......just my opinion.) hope this helps!

Amsoil or redline are superior quality synthetics that are true Type IV's. They are designed to go several thousand miles between changes. Having said all that; regardless of what oil you are using, it's imperative to use a 'quality filter' with any oil. The Amsoil EaO, for example, will filter down to 10 microns. At $15.00 a pop; however, there not cheap. Bottom line: You get what you pay for. Additionally, it's always better to stick with an oil that will consistently do the job... rather than continuing to switch between types and brands.

I personally use synthetic because of the superior protection that synthetic oil provides; however, a good quality dino followed up with a good filter at the recommend intervals will provide good protection as well.

 

i think its ok to switch from pp to mobil1, but its probably better to stick with one or the other, more or less because they have different addative packages.....other than that i think its ok. i was using mobil1, but im running pp now, because walmart didnt have anymore mobil1 when it was time for my oil change. pp also gets awesome reviews on bobistheoilguy.com. as far as the filter......the oem filter is a good filter, but i actually am using the mobil1 filter(part number

m1-102), with zero complaints, as it also gets great reviews!!


oil changes on these trucks are incredibly easy, im the only person who touches mine!!

 

What Toyota puts in is fine. Mine has 8800 and as not down. It will go to next service.
What we need is a boost pump to pre oil the thing and a block heater.
They are made for aircraft.
A fuel boost pump has saved me more than once.

 

What is this about the several thousand or at least no more than Dino oil milage between changes? i thought synthetics give you 10,000 miles or more, not true?????-Rich

 

actually,certain companies(such as amsoil) have oil that they say you can run for 25k miles................but there is no way in hell im gonna do it. fact is, oil, no matter synthetic or dino still gets dirty, and needs to be changed accordingly. just my .02, but i'd run dino for only 3k and synthetic for only 5k. no matter how the oil looks then, these are good change intervals, imo. you can do the 10k oil changes if you want to, but i wouldnt.

 

I'm running mobil 1 full synthetic. I am running 10k miles between changes. Although i am planning on changing the filter every 5k. I refuse to pay the extra money if i have to change as often as dino oil, which BTW i only changed every 5k miles on the beamer and she ran great, well over 200k miles. New oil is better than oil 30 years ago. back in the day you needed to change every 3k, but dino oil will be fine for 5k and synthetics last much longer.

I went in and 5k and had the dealer change the filter since i had a coupon and needed warranty work done anyway. I took in my own oil (mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic) I just this weekend broke 10k on my truck so i'm gonna change the filter, then at 15k im gonna change the oil and the filter. I still havent settled on a filter yet though. probably mobil 1 or amsoil. I need to look at the TRD filter and compare it to the others. does anyone know anything about the TRD filters?

 

When I bought my Taco it included some sort of "protection" package (don't have the details with me now) that was an undercoat rust inhibitor that also better soundproofed the cabin, but it also includes some service. I get my first 2 scheduled oil changes (every 5K miles) free at the dealership. After that, if I pay them for the other recommended maintenance, they throw in the oil change for free.

Does anybody know what oil Toyota dealerships use? Would I be better off doing the Mobil 1 on my own?

 

I know that North Park Toyota in Boerne, TX uses Castrol and Mobil 1. I use their Mobil 1 Full Synthetic.

 

Well I'm going with Mobil 1 cause of the availibilty issue! AMsoil not as common! Once I start using an oil then thats it I stay with it!

I spoke to several people including those who would know. Just run what Toy does. Mobil One is a waste of money.
And aside from expense will not do better.
My engineer cousin changes oil at 3,000. It gets dirty.

 

Several those who know? I can tell you for sure...there is a difference among oils. Yes, they all have to meet the minimum federal gov't standards; however, there are significant various levels of phosphorus, zinc and various engineered additives to differentiate oils. To list a few: your better oils will not break down during extreme temperature swings, responds better to high pressure ratios(stress), better cold pour-able capabilities, and adaptive 'type' molecules to adjust to various conditions to protect your engine(synthetics). This is nothing new, the engineering and testing of how various oils hold up has been around for a long time and various UAO(oil analysis) haves shown concrete evidence that there is a differences among oils. You can relate it to buying cheap gasoline(all must meet fed stds)...run it long enough, more than likely, you will have issues(clogged injectors, high-levels carbon build-up, clogged catalytic, etc...)

You mention "Just run what TOY does"...what is that? Toyota runs conventional dino oil from the factory; however, the Toyota dealers usually replace the oil with whatever brand that can buy in bulk the cheapest. No particular slant on type or brand....just as long as it meets the minimum federal standards. Therefore, I wouldn't say "Mobile One is a waste of money" or any other 'engineered oil' for that matter. If you don't plan on keeping your truck 'long term', then what I just mentioned probably doesn't apply to you; however, if you do plan on keeping it 'long term'(like I do) then you can pay a little now or a lot later.

 

I know that there is a difference in oils.
What the dealer put in mine should be Toy spec. I have yet to change it.
I use 10/40 what is on sale in some. I run 100 wt.Purple Triton in Contenentals and 100 wt. Aeroshell in Lycomings. The R100R BMW has what the dealer put in it at the last service but I use 30 Wt.Castrol in that and the DRZ400S.And 30 wt. in the mowers.
Castrol 10/40 seems to like the Toranado.
I have an 10,000 ml. oil change/ service coming up for the Taco.
It was serviced at 7,700 mls. when I bought it from the owner of the dealership. It was his ride and he moded it with stuff that I don`t need, such as a 6 CD Player. The axel lock may come in handy.
So; should I ignore my cousin who has an MS in auto engineering and buy a case of Moble 1 when it goes on sale? To go to the logical conclusion, should I replace the differential oil with synthetec?
I would be suprised to live ten more years and I could not care less about what happens after that.
I can certainly bring my own oil to the service.
I would have to look at the maintance log; but there are some adjustments to be checked off, etc.
This oil subject is confusing. There are a lot of well respected opinions.
