Well shit....While preparing for winter I snapped off the zerk on my front driveshaft while trying to grease it. So.....I should probably replace that u-joint before too much crap gets in there and destroys it.

Looks like the correct joint is Spicer 5-153X:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CKN762/

But Spicer 5-1310-1X has the same dimensions, and the zerk is in a much easier to access spot. But....Amazon doesn't list it as being the correct part.
    https://www.amazon.com/Spicer-5-1310-1X-U-Joint-Kit/dp/B00DOI8CV4

Any experience here? Is the zerk on the 153x easy to access? Will 1330-1x fit? Is it a bad idea to get joint with the zerk on the end due to trail damage, or out of balance?

I think the moral of my story is to just don't fix it that's not broke. The tie rods were preventative maintenance at least. The grease fittings and wheel bearings are different story.

Ripped off all four mudflaps. Scratches all down both sides 6112’s up front on 3rd notch 5100’s in back with Toytech 1” block Skids & sliders from SOS Concepts I got rid of the 1” block and put on Wheelers 1 1/2” progressive AAL. SPC UCA. Be sure your standing on the drivers side when reading the instructions! I swapped sides so many times that I can swap UCA’s in 15 minutes. I put in the 3/4” spacer to eliminate the Taco Lean, and just got my 4th alignment. Traded the OEM rims for 17” Sport rims and a bora bora 1” spacer. I got my Firestone 285/70/17 MT2’s. Pelfreybilt gas tank skid and hi-lift jack should be here Friday. Looking at bumpers, but I think they will wait for next year. So far I’m happy with my build. I’ve done it all myself, leading to a lot of cussing and frustration, but it’s all mine.
There’s one in Kokomo too. It’s got alot of goodies,,,,, it’s also very clean.

Sooooo.... anyone want to help me get over the last two hurdles with this stupid truck before I light it on fire?

In order to install the new power steering rack I need to remove the 17mm bolt holding the high pressure hose to the pump. It’s tucked pretty well down the side of the engine and, of course, is tight as shit. I can’t get to it with an impact gun and am afraid to use a breaker bar with as many extensions as I’d need. I’m also afraid to torch it because it’s so close to the power steering pump and serpentine belt.

Second obstacle, I bought a replacement intermediate steering shaft and figured I’d swap it in while the new rack goes in. Problem is, I can’t get the slip yoke at the top to budge. Both bolts are out but it’s seized on there. Don’t have a problem hitting it with a torch or an air hammer, I’m just beyond over it with this truck at this point...

Once those two things are done, it’s all downhill from there. Install new power steering hoses and rack, new intermediate shaft, new front suspension and then torque everything down and put the new wheels on. At this rate that all might happen before 2021. Probably not though.

Intermediate steering shaft slip yoke, through the driver’s side wheel well. Needs to move up to release the shaft.

Thanks for the offer Ed but I’ll be out of town this weekend... trying to use my day off work today to get the truck closer to done.

Haha, the truck is no longer in danger. Just got that bolt out. Went through the wheel well using two box wrenches (for more leverage) and it broke free.

And just got the lower intermediate steering shaft out. Instead of sliding the slip yoke up, I reinserted the upper bolt then used the air hammer to widen the slot on the lower bolt. From there I beat the thing down away from the cab. Took a bit of time, but it’s out now.

And oh, the trip won’t be canceled. I’m flying to Oregon to buy a car.

@09TRDSport4x4 - Your truck looks way too clean for seized bolts....Surprised you had that much trouble.

Comparatively mine looks a lot worse.... maybe my frame coating, combined with fluid film & 4x4 mud holes makes my truck look like every bolt is rusted and fused together.

Did you see the before pictures of my rear frame, drums and suspension? Because that’s essentially how corroded/rusted everything underneath the truck is/was. You should see the parts of my frame I haven’t painted yet or basically anything under the truck I haven’t replaced... I’ll have to take some close up pictures of the spare tire mount I removed, the power steering rack I just took out and my axles and you’ll see the rust/corrosion.

I’ve done a lot of work (very slowly) replacing seized bolts, suspension components, this stupid power steering system (the rack was leaking at both ends) and cleaning/painting the frame. And the irony of the whole thing will be if Toyota decides my frame needs replaced when I take the truck in to be inspected in February (my 12 years is up in late March).

Now that I think about it....I might have driven my air chisel in between....by the bolt holes to open it up, then drove that upwards towards the firewall.....glad you go it out.

Yeah, after a few failed attempts to move the slip yoke upward, I finally found a video on here in another thread where the guy only took the lower bolt out of the slip yoke then used an air hammer to hit the shaft down and away from the cab. It was a tight squeeze getting the air hammer in there and pointed the right direction, but it eventually worked.

I’ll be using a liberal amount of anti seize on both the new intermediate shaft where it goes into the slip yoke and the power steering rack where it connects to the steering shaft. Just in case I ever have to take either one out again...

I’m on the home stretch now though. All the old parts are out and I’ve painted the front part of the frame/subframe. I just need to install the two new power steering hoses, the new intermediate shaft, center and install the new rack, put on new outer tie rod ends, add fluid and torque everything down. From there I’ll install the new Elka 2.5 IFP coilovers and put the wheels on. Truck should be back on the ground and ready for an alignment before the end of the month.

    Thank you @EdinCincinnati

Some photos from the mounting mock up on my 05’ DLCB roof rack. I’m waiting on powered coating. Wasn’t completely happy with what is on the market and my daily work needs plus extra fun needs. Working on a long bed cap as well.
