Anyone have any luck pairing a tailgate pad with a rollup tonneau cover? I'm trying to find a setup that will allow me to shuttle bikes one day and then "secure" things in the bed the next day.

I'm using the secure definition loosely. I'm hoping the rollup cover will still close and not be able to be lifted with the tailgate closed and locked. I realize I motivated person can still cut the cover or in theory pry the cover open, but I'm really just trying to stuff out sight and hopefully fairly dry with the cover is rolled out.

For reference I've got a 3rd gen ACLB and already have a Dakine tailgate pad. Have yet to purchase the rollup cover. Used to have a tri-fold cover but sold it because I'm ultimately planning on mounting a rack over the cover to hold a RTT.

I use a tailgate pad and I'm looking to get the Peragon retractable cover - looks sturdy and secure and takes up very little room when pulled back. Also looks easy to remove completely if needed.

I'm confused, are you trying to find a cover that will close with your tailgate pad still on?

Yup. With my old tri-fold cover I used to be able to close the cover and lock it without having to remove the pad. Wasn’t the prettiest looking thing but it worked.

I mean it takes less than a minute to take off a tailgate pad but I'll bite.

I have a Truxedo x15 and an EVOC tailgate pad. with this setup I can have the tonneau cover fully locked up and the tailgate halfway closed (similar to how you can think you have a car door closed but it needs a bit more force). To be honest I bet if I had the pad situated a certain way I bet I could close it fully but I'm more scared of damaging the tonneau cover that way.

Depending on how thick the Dakine pad is in certain places I think you could have the tailgate closed with a similar setup. You are definitely going to be putting unnecessary stress on the tonneau cover though due to the way they latch. They are all made to be waterproof as well so as you can imagine they don't give much lee-way at the tailgate side.

In my opinion I don't think it's worth doing this and potentially damaging the roll-up tonneau cover when it literally takes less than a minute to take off the tailgate pad.

Exactly the feedback I was looking for. Thank you! Your point on damaging the tailgate cover makes perfect sense. The half closed situation is what I’m probably gonna try and do. I forgot to mention I’m also looking to keep random things out of site when at the trail (e.g. bike tools) hence the cover + tailgate combo. We shall see how it goes!
