I looked long and hard for a nice used Tacoma. I finally found a 2014 XSP-X with 160,000 miles in pretty darn good shape. I got a fair price and was thrilled the 1st few days. Now the tranny is slipping and banging hard into 2nd gear. I'm afraid I'm going to need a new transmission. I have an appointment with a Toyota mechanic in a couple days. I wanted to start my search for a transmission ahead of time , Just in case. I hope it's something simple.
Where would you feel comfortable finding a reman or used tranny? I have the 4.0 engine.

Car-part.com. You can find used low mileage transmissions for a reasonable price.

First thing to do is check the fluid level and condition. You could get lucky.

its really hard to believe the transmission was working properly before he bought it, then all of a sudden its banging and slipping for no apparent reason, auto transmission issues don't just occur there are always tell tale signs that it may be having a problem before banging/slipping occur, first one would be hard to put the trans in gear or a hard clunk putting it in gear

I'd start by making sure the fluid is at the right level before taking it to a dealer. They're going to take you for a ride as far as price goes. I'd try to avoid them at all costs. Car-part.com is a great resource for a low mileage used trans if you ultimately have to replace it like mentioned above

I am guessing you mean the entire truck should be disassembled and inspected with all non destructive inspection processes .

Then any questionable parts should be brought to the sellers attention before the vehicle is allowed to be sold in any form.

    Correct??

any used sale could be considered suspect

which results in " Buyers Beware “ !!!

there are toooooo any threads whereby the new owner finds themselves up to there earlobes

in incidents....issues & trouble that known b4 the $$$$$$$$$ exchanges hand & the ink is dry

the buyer might not close the deal

many have been advised to have an experienced trained mechanic look a vehicle over

    wise move ........

many have been advise to check insurance/ DMV records

wise move ....... Car Fax comes to mind

a good 15-20 test drive vehicle will warm up

check out engine brakes & trans =fundamental evaluation

some tho few have the history of vehicle in repair/ maintenance receipts

    another level o confidence

a few suggestions/ recommendations that many would use if it were there son/daughter buying

    for U maybe NOT

if i were compelled as U mentioned up top

    Id buy new

Get it checked carefully before anyone pulls the transmission. My Honda Fit was throwing codes that indicated transmission trouble. A few days later started shifting hard and driving wonky. I was quoted $2000 for a rebuild. Less than an hour after dropping the car off at the transmission shop they called and said it was ready, come and get it.

When they started looking around they found where mice had chewed the insulation off a wire under the hood. They repaired the damaged wire, charged me 1/2 hour labor, ($50) and that fixed the problem.

Driveline/transmission shop here sourced the remanufactured transmission for me for vehicle. You shouldn’t have to worry about finding a replacement I wouldn’t think.

Generally, if I’m buying a vehicle (no matter the vehicle) with over 150k I factor in a transmission to the sale price and ask myself is it worth it just as a rule of thumb

Also sorry the most important part!...to really answer your question...when I first got my transmission problem diagnosed it was at the Toyota dealership...they quoted me for a reman and new oem transmission.

I think the OEM for my car was 5500 and the reman was around 3500. Ended up going to a different shop that specialized in transmissions

Assuming it is an automatic, there are easy instructions on how to just a wire in the OBD port to get a light to blink... lets operator know the trans is at temp. Then, open top plug and check. I did this the first month of owning my 2014 DSCB Sport.
