Hey all. The touchscreen in my 2012 Tacoma is on the fritz. It flickers and goes blank. I've been doing so much research trying to figure out exactly what I need to buy to do the job myself.

I have the JBL and I want to keep steering wheel control functionality and backup camera. Crutchfield wants to sell me the unit and the kit with all the adapters, all together comes out to around $500 and it looks like they're selling me some items I don't need. It seems like I can get all the pieces I need myself for maybe 1/2 the price, but I just can't figure out exactly what I need.

    Anyone got experience with this?

Crutchfields is the go to for stereo replacements as far as many people are concerned, myself included. One of the biggest selling points for Crutchfield's is one stop shopping, free shipping, service and advice before and after the sale.

This part of your post makes no sense to me:

" it looks like they're selling me some items I don't need. It seems like I can get all the pieces I need myself for maybe 1/2 the price, but I just can't figure out exactly what I need. "

If you don't know what you need then how could you possibly say they are selling you stuff that you don't need.

Maybe make a list of what they are selling you and then make a list of the items you don't think you need. Include that here so someone can make an informed answer to your post.

Or you could piecemeal something together from various places on the internet and put it all together and hopefully it will work and you don't forget something you need and don't find out until halfway though the replacement...

Not sure what parts they quoted you, but to replace the head unit with a decent double din HU that has backup camera input, and presumably Bluetooth, and the adapters to retain steering wheel controls, as well as the new faceplate that sounds about right.

Crutchfield is not the cheapest place to buy from, but probably the best place, as far as product knowledge, and technical support during the install process. More than makes up for the extra cost in parts, especially if you are doing it yourself (and for the first time from what it sounds like).

x3 on crutchfield. The time they save me researching for compatibility of components and ease of install negates the slightly higher pricing of products. Even the extra $25 I paid for them to crimp and prewire the connections made the install a breeze. Literally plug and play.

I can't speak to the extras you have (such as camera) but I've done business with Crutchfield several times through the years and been treated well every time. I didn't need the add on stuff (since I had it) for my install but I knew for sure what I needed and their recommendations were all correct and no fluff assuming I didn't have anything to start with.

I just replaced mine and i always look at crutchfield first. Crutchfield isnt going to sell you something you dont need. Add everything to the cart and then look those parts up on Amazon to compare. IF the total price is comparable, which it usually is, go with crutchfield. They give detailed instructions and have excellent customer service.

That being said, I went with Amazon for this order because I felt i had a pretty good idea of how to do the install after looking at a number of threads on here. So i saved probably $20.

    what are those?
crutchfield support is the best... they wont stop until you get it working the way it was supposed to, I had to call on some technical install stuff and they saved me, that alone is worth it.

Even vehicle specific knowledge, Crutchfield seems to know very well. I remember calling the tech support line when I had trouble locating the reverse wire on my truck, and he pointed me right to it.

Piling on to say Crutchfield is one of the best companies I've done business with. Period. I've not regretted one cent I've ever given them.
