Hey all. I just bought a 17 Tacoma SR 5MT about three weeks ago with only 13,560 miles on it. The truck was turned in off of a lease, had a clean carfax, and looked completely clean with no rust or damage. I signed up for the Toyota maintenance tracker today, just to keep everything on the truck in one place as a supplement to paperwork, and I saw what is attached below about the transmission and clutch components. Is this something that should have been reflected on the carfax or communicated to me by the Toyota dealer when I just bought the vehicle? Also, should I take it as a good thing that this work was done or is this not a good sign? I’ve just got this bad feeling ever since I found this. There’s only about 14000 miles on the truck now.
Any advice or knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Don't see what the problem is if it's driving and shifting fine.

Curious. Toyota would have had that in their records system. Would the repair have affected the perceived value of the truck?

Clutch is in the same category as brakes, so nope.

It was CPO, that’s why I was surprised. If they replaced everything they say they did, I feel like I should be happy because I’m riding around with less than 600 miles on the new parts, essentially. I don’t even know how someone could mess up that bad though. I’ve been stuck plenty of times and never burnt through a clutch or had to have my vehicles towed to a dealer.

To me? I think it’s one of those things that you would rather know at the time, rather than find out later on. If that makes sense.

I think you are expecting too much from Carfax and CPO. It’s just a replaced clutch, nothing more.

That's exactly it. It is a tool. Better than nothing, but won't show everything, especially if not reported or not reported properly. For me, it showed many things I wouldn't have known about otherwise. I wouldn't say "never trust it" but rather take it with a grain of salt.

you have no idea how many people go from their first car an automatic civic or similar, get their first big boy or girl job and go for the biggest trendy vehicle they can find. That used to be a wrx but now it’s the Tacoma. And its cool to have a manual and be cool right? Never driven a manual, never driven a leaf sprung mid size, never driven a drivetrain mapped for being a truck. So they trash it and complain that it’s wrong because it doesn’t drive like their old civic.

sorry. Small rant. Just a newbie who doesn’t know how to drive standard, in over their head. Why do you think they leased it and walked away at the end?

That’s a mechanical repair, not wreck damage. Never seen mechanical repairs listed in a car fax just wreck damage that was reported. Toyota lists whatever service I have done at their facilities on their website.

Mechanical repairs don't get reported to carfax. Neither does warranty work. Just inspections, registrations and insurance claims. Sometimes. As said, Carfax is a tool, not the gospel. The old GIGO rule applies here. And that they have an excellent marketing team, making buyers believe it's a 'must have' in a used purchase.

Mechanical repairs don't get called out on any purchase, much less a CPO purchase. It's why it's CPO, any necessary repairs have been made, therefore it's been certified.

So the lessee didn't know how to drive a manual well. But they did have it towed to the dealer and repaired. They could have done it DIY in their back 40 with used parts. If it drove well, the dealer would have still CPO'd it. Because they roll the dice on low mile nice looking poplular vehicles, knowing that occasionally they'll get bitten, but most of the time they just get to sell at a higher price for little effort.

So @right eye ryan, if this had been 'disclosed' (which there was no requirement to do) would you have bought the truck anyway, since you liked it, it drives well, and apparently was the right price for you?

It's just a repair. Not too unlike warranty work. On a vehicle that was subsequently CPO'd.

Enjoy your truck and your additional ~12k of clutch life. Odds are you will have moved on to something else long before that clutch needs attention.

Not necessarily. In years past looking at used cars I've seen everything from brakes to clutches to whole engines replaced depending on the shop listed on CarFax reports. There is a "My CarFax" feature now that lets you track maintenance of any vehicle as long as you have a VIN and/or license plate that shows any time it's been to a shop that reports to CarFax (most dealers and larger indie shops).

@Clearwater Bill to be honest, I’ll probably keep the truck until it dies. I kept my 90 F150 until it died at 389000 miles or so and still drive my legacy with around 200000 on it. I still would have gotten the truck, of course. I think I was more mad at the shock value. When you think you know everything but suddenly you don’t, ya know?

@taco-houla well it was a 3 year 30,000 mile lease so I was surprised at the mileage when I found it. No complaints though.

I wouldnt worry about it, its just a clutch. They got stuck, smoked the clutch and limped it back home to get it replaced. Like others have said, clutch is a wear part, sometimes they wear out faster when your stuck.

I cooked the clutch on my first pickup pulling a honda out of a ditch in the winter.

I wouldn’t Worry about it to Much it’s a clutch witch is like brakes can last 200k miles or only a month old depends on the Driver & how they used it so it’s a new clutch from the Dealer even better than a used clutch that’s 3 years old so enjoy the truck it’s hard enough to even get a manual transmission as it is.unless you get one brand new & that I even had to go 795 miles out of state to get my hands on one.FYi

Its a clutch. It will get worn.

Kind of in the same ballpark as why they didn't tell you how many oil changes or how many filters got replaced

    No worries
When people get stuck with a MT they will sometimes try and dump the clutch at insane RPMs to rock the truck. Sometimes a 1500$ clutch job is cheaper than a 4000$ tow.
