i'm thinking of getting some 285/75's put on but i'm worried i will lose a ton of power which the truck is lacking to begin with. Do you guys think it would be better to go with 32's instead or could the truck handle the 33's? Hopefully someone has done this with their 4 cyl and can tell me how it went for them

    I have seen a few 4cly with 33s but those were 2nd gens. I have a 2nd gen 4cyl with 32s and i wish i just went for the 33s.

i have 255/85's on my screaming 2.7 with 170k on it and i haven't really noticed much if any power loss, i mean you could always do the deck plate mod, and some kind of exhaust to make up for so grunt.

I had 33x12.50s on my 98 2.7 auto and it did fine, hell at one point I had 33x14 boggers on it and it still did fine. All I had done to it were header, flowmaster muffler, and k&n air filter...

i prob won't be regearing so thats the thing i am worried about, i wouldn't be getting mud terrain tires just all terrain so hopefully that will help a little, but it is harder to find 32's than it is to find the 33's and if i went with 265/75 then they would only be 31.5's and i want a little bigger than that

Ive used 33’s & 34’s on a few 4 cylinder Tacoma’s with stock gearing, currently running 33’s (285/70/17) on a 2019 auto 2.7, it’s fine around town, main issue is in the highway at 60+ when trying to speed up just a little, non stop shifting if left on 6 gear.

I usually keep it in 4th with the ECT engaged around town, plenty of power. Once on the HWY, disengage the ECT and put in 5th, 6th is useless. I do live in a flat area, the only hills are the overpasses.

Weight rotation plays a big part also, lighter wheels & tires will help.

What kind of mileage were you getting looking to go 17x9 with 285 70 17s all terrain with a 3in lift. Worried about milage as well as not being able to move out of the way. I drive 30 miles to work at 60mph. Then home the same

The 4 bangers are already geared lower. You'll probably see less difference with bigger tires with that engine than the V6. Of course the V6 starts with more power. It ain't gonna run fast even with factory tires.

Mine was 4wd, I would say about 15/16 mpg and a good loss of power. I could still make ANY speed limit, just took a bit longer to get there.

I’m currently buying parts for my 2021 V6 4wd. I was/am considering only going 32’s with a 2” lift, just because of mpg & power loss.

Look for the lightest tire for you application. I’ve always ran E, D & C rated tires, my last set was (34’s) 285/75/17 C’s at 65lbs each, that a lot of rotational mass, plus the wheel weight. I’m also looking for lighter wheels, everything helps.

I’m considering two tires, the 33” Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/70/17 116Q at 48.74lbs, that’s a light duty tire (116Q) but I’m not going to be climbing over rocks. If I go 32’s, it will most likely be the Wrangler Duratracs in 265/75/16 112/109Q D rated at 45lbs.

If I were going back to a 2.7 Tacoma, 32’s in a lightweight tire would probably be my largest tire without a gear change. My daily round trip is 46 miles in Houston. Checkout the 265/75/16 and 265/70/17’s with a lift threads, some good looking builds.

    Good Luck !

This is not my truck, but you can see how much a 265/70/17 changes the look.

I wouldn’t even go from a stock P rated 245/75/16 to anything else without gears. Especially if not a 5spd like I have. With 3.91 gearing it is still under geared from the factory IMO. Yes, I know, AT has 4.30 but it’s an auto 6speed so it’s a wash..

2nd/3rd gen trucks are just too heavy to try and get away with bigger meats with a 2.7 on stock gearing if you even care a little about baseline performance. My truck had BFG 265/75/16 on it when I Bought it CPO and 5th gear was pretty much useless on the freeway. You could feel the driveline struggle..

There’s a reason I went back to 245 as I prepare accordingly for bigger tires - and I HATE small tires lol. The hardy 2.7 deserves proper gearing.
