    Depends. I'm both. I'm hard on transmissions and I engine brake a lot.

    Brass from the thrust washers inside the planateries if I had to guess . Common when using the transmission for heavy engine breaking .
    Glad you dropped the pan .Dropping the pan is by far the most important procedure when servicing a transmission .
    Can you imagine if you tried flushing that fluid through the valve body like most lube shops do ?

    You're a good resource on here buddy. Glad you're around. I honestly didn't even think of a flush pushing it into the valve body. Anything I should modify or change in regard to engine braking / wear?

    Would you believe i am dealing with at least 4 members rite now through private messaging who have issues after flushing their transmission without removing the trans pan .


    If i had anything to suggest ?
    allow the transmission to automatically downshift rather than using the trans for engine braking until your next pan drop .
    If my assumptions are correct about the thrust washers in the planetaries wearing down , you should see less brass on your next service :fingerscrossed:

    Is that a break in thing or just something that will constantly happen with engine braking? I guess that's a habit I need to break. Brakes are cheaper than a trans rebuild.

    Brakes are cheaper yes .
    There is no break in for an automatic transmission that I know of . Manual transmissions are very stiff to shift when new and will eventually loosen up with mileage

    Using the transmission to slow the weight of the vehicle down works well , but the thrust loads inside this transmission are huge when engine braking .
    Every time you take your foot off the gas pedal , Toyota turns the fuel injectors off and I can only imagine this would even place a heavier load on the transmission . There,s no fuel keeping the engine revs up like other domestic vehicles
    The 16 thrust washers inside the planetaries are first to show signs of wear because they are very small and made of brass rather than steel . The brass works as a cushion between the planetary pinions .
    Brass is a soft metal and doesnt collect on the magnets . Brass is deposited by your transmission fluid on the bottom of the pan and can accidently be flushed into the valve body by introducing new transmission fluid during a flush without removing the pan before you begin the service
