Overland Shopping List

I recently bought a 2020 Tacoma OR DCSB AT for towing my boat to the lake, mountain bike trips in the northeast, and road trips. I'm planning a trip next year to drive from NYC to Colorado/Utah and I will be going with a female friend who is visiting from brazil. I am doing research and I will only buy the necessities. Please take a look at my shopping list below and let me know if i'm missing something or you have suggestion how I can save money.

I bought a Rockpals 500W but I had to send it back. The only things remaining on my wish list is a Jackery 500, tailgate electric lock, and a cheap solar panel.

 

Guess I'll have to start with #2 first. Really the only tonneau covers you can run with full access to the bed are retractable. There are several out there that lock, but I would also do the tailgate electronic lock as well. #1 You should be able to, but you might want to measure to ensure. You can also see if you can get bike attachments for the rack.

Anything that is visible to someone who really wants it bad enough, they will get it.

 

This is exactly what i'm thinking about the bikes. The girl and I will have $5000 in bikes so i'm thinking to take the wheels off and keep them in the cab. I have to measure to see if they will fit. I think the only other things of value would be my grill and cooler so I can find some way to lock them with my kryptonite chain and bicycle locks. I'm a little opposed to buying a tonneau because it will up my budget a lot. I'm already close to $5000 with tax and installation

 

Yeah this is a fun project to plan out! Personally I'd encourage you to go with better tires than the Wranglers - I've enjoyed the improvements of KO2s over the Wranglers for example. I also like having the security of a tonneau that also allows me to have a bed rack over it withe he tent there, instead of over the roof. Having a RTT over the bed help gas milage and it's nicer to get in and out of, setup, etc. KBVoodoo's rack over tonneau is an excellent combo. FWIW

 

You sure you need to swap the tires out? If you just plan to truck camp. The stock tires are fine.

 

Some higher end tri folds have an extra fold give full bed access. Only drawback would be you lose your rear view.

welcome to owning a Tacoma. There is one thing for sure - you’ll spend cash like mad on mods.

 

If you don’t have one yet, then a good bumps and bruises first aid kit for the truck and a smaller one for the trails. Learn how to apply a splint in case of an accident on the trails and the basics on stopping a large cut from bleeding. Prepare for worse case scenarios especially if it’s only you two out on the trails. It’s something easily overlooked, but you’ll be glad to do a little research ahead of time if the unfortunately event happens!

 

I edited the shopping list in the 1st post. Less lift. Less aggressive tires. Different jumper pack according to @SamOfSteel suggested video. Buy some camp gear from walmart. All in all $1000 cheaper. Bilstein 5100's, front setting on 4, 1.5" AAL in the rear. Anyone have experience how this will ride compared to stock? The most load i'd have is a RTT, gear, and my 19ft boat with 250lb tongue weight.

 

Fellow cyclist here - it ain't the chain, it's the lock. Lock picking is a big hobby now. If you want to get really scared and depressed, check out all the videos on Youtube where people pick your exact lock (whatever lock that may happen to be) in about 10 seconds. If there are two of you, just don't leave the bikes unattended. If you're leaving the bikes locked up (LOL) while you go off hiking all day, there's a pretty decent chance they won't be there. I would disassemble them to whatever size allowed putting them inside the truck.

 

No need to spend all that cash to sleep on top of the truck (great for IG I guess). Buy a decent ground tent/air mattress and regular camping gear. Put a topper on the truck for securing your stuff and weatherproof area. Nothing else needed. I drove a 2 WD (limited slip) ford explorer all over Utah when my buddy was a Ranger at Dead Horse Point just outside of Moab. Some of the climbs were insane but aired down I didn't spin a tire on the rock. Tires and 4WD are only needed if running some of the more technical trails, which I wouldn't in a new 40K rig. If you want to run the trails I'd rent a jeep or buggy and have fun without tearing up your daily driver.

Although this guy wants to travel, I'm convinced it's not a travel hobby, it's a vehicle customization hobby. Real travelers are out there in old Silverados and T100's, buying used tires and drinking rum on the beach.

 

I don't post anything on IG and I still like the idea of a RTT lol if it doesn't work out then it will be a lesson learned and I will sell it. But I think that you have good reasoning on not beating up my 40k truck. I googled side-by-side rentals in moab and they start at $320 for the day. So I could do the scenic easy trails in my truck and rent a side-by-side for the more intense stuff. I think the most practical setup would be the 5100's raising the front 1.5", 1" AAL in the rear, and stock tires.

 

Do yourself a favor and don’t get your camping gear from Walmart. It’s literally disposable gear good for a few trips and then it falls apart, goes in the trash, and you’re buying all over again.

REI garage sales are a great place to score cheap quality gear. It’s all the stuff that’s been returned and is heavily discounted. If you’re not too picky you can get fully setup for a few hundred bucks and it’s all much higher quality than the Walmart crap.

 

A 1.5/1" lift and stock tires will take you around the world. More aggressive tires in the 32" range will do a lot of pretty tough off road stuff too. I have always run 235/85/16's with great success. Buy quality tires.

 

This made me think of a guy whose rode a 90cc honda scooter all the way to argentina lol a lot of people over gear everything when we don't need much. I like to compare it to "tacticool" of the gun world.

EDIT: Just thought of it.. There was another guy years ago, that was going to ride a ducati multistrada around the world. He didn't make it far until he sold it and bought a cheap POS and finished his trip with that.

 

You're better off spending the money from the lift-kit on 2 full-size spare wheels/tires, tools, a quality jack, and some spare parts.

 

There is plenty to see from your truck without causing damage. Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point (state park), or about 2 hour drive into the mountains with lots of non technical trails that are fine in stock configuration. I wouldn't own a rooftop tent because then you are locked in to staying at camp once you set it up. With a regular tent you can set-up camp before dark then go drive around and explore more, but you do you. Yes rent a side by side, $350/day is cheap compared to trying more technical trails w/out a good spotter and tearing your bumpers off and smashing your rocker panels. Bring warm clothes, it can get cold AF in the high desert at night. Bring a black light for finding scorpions at night. Watch out for black widow spiders . Lots of great mountain biking and solitude.
