Hi Tacoma world from down under,
I own the Prado (not sure what it is called over there) 2015 model with the last of the 1GR-FE 4 litre petrol engines before they went all diesel. I use the vehicle mainly for towing a caravan and find it can’t hold 6th gear at 100 kph.
It will do it easily in 5th with the torque converter unlocked and sometimes in 5th with the torque converter locked. I know it stays in 5th and see the torque converter locking and unlocking as the engine revs change between 1900 and 2300 rpm when I’m in “S” mode.
I am pretty sure my evaluation is correct...the engine simply doesn’t quite have enough torque and i am looking at fitting a supercharger so that I can get the torque boost right own low and ideally have the engine pulling the van in 6th gear and 1600 rpm which it comfortably does now without the van on the back.
So the question to the forum is simply has anyone supercharged the 1GR-FE engine preferably with a Magnusson charger?
    Kind regards from Oz

Gas engines just don’t make the same torque as diesel. 6th is does not allow the engine to make enough power and you are putting more load on your engine and trans. More realistic towing is 4th gear and 88kph.

We cant get the AC60 series transmission behind the 4 litre engine in North America . Are you sure its not a 5 speed A750E ?
The AC60 series transmissions were introduced in North America in 2016 . Not too sure when they were released on your side of the map

Weird thing to ask. Most people here would advise you to stay out of overdrive gears when towing (i.e. use gears 1-4 only). The 2021 4Runner sold here (same platform as the Prado), last remaining Toyota here with the 1GR-FE, still has a 5-speed A750 transmission. Just keep the revs up and go. You won't use more fuel than with a supercharger and lower rpms.

A supercharger will also require premium fuel (91 octane RM/2 in the US or 96 octane RON in Australia), so you end up spending more money.
