Planning on upgrading my stock wheels/tires from 265/70R16 to 265/70R17. I’ll need to upsize the spare as well but can I just throw a 265/75R16 tire on the spare and call it good? That would save me from having to buy a fifth wheel..

Total wheel diameter ends up being almost exactly the same (1mm difference). Anyone else do this?

If you’re running 17s is it necessary to change the spare to 17”? Or just out of convenience to have all 5 tires match?

You can even just run the OE spare. Once you get some treadwear on the 32" tires it'll all get lost in the wash.

Ok thanks good to know! I guess the OE spare will be good enough to get home or to a shop if necessary.

I'm running 265/75-16 GY Duratracs with 9/32" tread remaining. Late July, I cut a 3" gash on the passenger rear tire sidewall on the trail, so I swapped it with the OE spare. I inflated the spare 5 psi higher than the 3 Duratracs. When I got home, I measured the "loaded height" of the spare (hub to ground) and found it in-between that of the driver's rear Duratrac and the front Duratracs. I subsequently drove it like this for another 1200 miles and went on two wheeling trips before finding a couple of used Duratracs to replace the spare. Never had spurious ABS or VSC activation. No issues with 4WD or rear locker engagement.

There isn't enough difference in those sizes, save your money. Your current spare is close enough. In fact by the time you have 40,000 miles on the new 265/70/17's your spare will be the same size, maybe bigger. Tires wear down and get smaller as they wear. A set near the end of their life will be about 1 size smaller than when new.

    I agree...a 265/75/16 will be fine as a spare for a 265/70/17.

I run that size and upgraded to a 265/70/17 as my spare. I have a Sport....so already had the 17" steel spare.

Caught Tire Discounters on a slow day and score $99 out the door on a new tire.
