1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am - Highest Mileage Trans Am in the world (officially in 2012, could still hold the record) - 370,000+ miles - 1 owner (not including myself until 2025) - 7 restorations

My dad took me to the trans am convention in Dayton Ohio back in 2011 and 2012. I was probably 10 when this picture was taken in 2012. I’m 18 now, I took ownership of the car when I was 11 (2013). I haven’t seen a trans am in person since October 3rd 2013 :(

the car is okay, it belonged to my dad who died back in 2013 from cancer. The car is currently up in Michigan sitting up in display until 2025 (thats when I receive the car)

Ahhh....the mighty 413 or 426 Mopar Max Wedge engine. The beast that proceeded the 426 HEMI. Stuffed In a lightweight B body like the Belvedere. Some sold from the factory with lightweight aluminum front clips. A race car sold to consumers. Made from 1962 to 1965. I had a friend that had a 1964 Belvedere version in the early 1980’s that had the 426 Max Wedge and aluminum panels up front. Late one night leaving a party he took me for ride and did a couple 1/4 mile passes where I about crapped my pants.

The car from the factory was stripped of any unneeded interior parts which made it even lighter. It rattled like a tin can and to tell you the truth I couldn’t wait to step outside of it. Anybody looking at this car thought it was a piece of junk. Run up against it and have the surprise of your life. He ran slicks on the street and I swear it felt like it did a wheel stand out of the hole. Before he took me for a ride I had no qualms about running my 1969 Ram Air IV GTO against it. I had second thoughts after riding passenger in it. I never did get to race him, wish I had. I’m sure it would have beat me though.

Lets put it this way, the only way you had a remote chance of beating him was if he broke!
I ran a couple of those max wedges for top stock eliminator at a small local drag strip, never beat one of them, stock for stock they ran better than the 426 street Hemi.
Trouble with them is that they were barely streetable, my old Chilton's shows the 1963 Dodge and Plymouth 426 425hp @ 13.5-1 compression ratio, and the 64 and 65 @ 12.5-1, the 425hp rating wasn't even close to what they actually did put out.

He had a Black Mach 1 from the same year. Both are very desirable however.

    ...^^^... What kind of stock gas for that 12.5 or 13.5 - 1 ? ...

IIRC ... back then, you could break the seal on a Sunoco pump and go beyond the 260 Grade and get maybe 105 Octane ?

Guys going to the strip would get someone to break a "Sunoco 260 seal" and mix with AV gas ... IIRC.

Super Shell was good back then too .... what was the best gas for those high compression monsters back them ?

I had a 10.75 - 1 car and it had to have a good grade of high test premium to keep from knocking.

"Corn Gas" would never make it back then ... lol ... :)
