    Hey All,

Figured I'd just post an FYI about the 3rd Gen TSB-0016-18 Engine Chirp Noise from the High-Pressure Fuel Pump for future people trying to figure it out like I was. I had this issues and had dug through the threads here and elsewhere trying to find answers but nothing was super clear and concise, so might as well put one out there.

I just got my taco fixed at the dealership for free (still under 60,000 miles) to get the High-Pressure Fuel Pump replaced. It would have been $1400 (Colorado$$) to fix outside of warranty, mainly because the part costs a lot, not so much the labor.

Hope this helps those who are trying to figure out weird noises from their trucks too.

    *********Backstory***********
Bought my truck in Aug. 2020 and driving it around at the place I bought it, I couldn't tell there was the chirp until I got home. I didn't hear the chirp until driving it for a while because the noise gets worse/louder only as the engine warms up.

It was hard for me to find similar recordings of the noise and some people thought it was a belt of the vacuum pump.

    My recordings of the noise:
    1) Recording of noise bouncing off wall of garage to amplify it.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwHXGPmopa0

    2) Recording of the noise from the engine bay
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMqOA7O7NV4

After a lot of research I found the TSB regarding the chirp noise and figured it was worth checking out. Took it to the dealer and that's what it was.

    Attached is the TSB PDF

Here is the completed work summary from the dealer:

Huh I always thought it was my serpentine belt needing to be replaced. My local dealer LOVES(/s) when I manage to print TSB's and bring them in with me "iT DoSnT WoRk LiKe ThAT" well it is today...

Lol that is exactly what I did. They tried to tell me "We'll see if it covers your VIN" which I already knew about and checked, highlighted it on the print out, and pointed it out to them when I got there :) . Jerks. Just trust that we do in fact have a clue that something is up with our vehicles.

It saddens me to hear people talk like that about the repair business, I know there are some bad seeds out there but that's a small percentage and most of us are honest and willing to fix the vehicles.

Berlin City gives me bad vibes all the time. I called and asked about the shift feel TSB, and they were like "we have to troubleshoot it" Finally after having it for the day they did the firmware upgrade. Is there a TSB for the 40mph shudder, feeling like it can't decide to lockup the converter or not? I'd love to have them take care of both for me

Pretty sure I just noticed my 16 doing this today. I’m at 74,xxx miles so I know the dealer won’t do it without a charge. Has anyone done this themselves? No way in paying the dealer $1300 to do it.

I see the aftermarket unit listed on Amazon on other threads. Toyota website shows the OEM pump for ~$1200 and all other OEM vendors online still want over $800. Has anyone tried the aftermarket unit? That seems like a big price difference and too good to be true.

I can absolutely live with the noise (assuming it doesn't get worse). Is this noise indicative of a more serious problem?

I asked the dealer tech at the time I got it fixed if it would have lead to anything worse and he assured me it wouldn't, just that it was an annoying noise. It gets worse/louder as the engine heats up too just FYI, so you might feel like it's getting louder, but it might just be because you've had the engine running for a long time

Try using different brand top tier 87 regular octane fuel, change oil with 0W20 synthetic every 5k miles and you may be able to keep the crickets out most of the time. There’s also fuel cleaning crickets that come out now and then, perfectly normal. Annoying, but perfectly normal.

It’s a thankless job, and there will always be jerks no matter what you do or where you work. Just keep your chin up, smile, do your best and ignore the rest.

Nah, no worries, its just annoying.

I wouldn't pay the stealer a dime but I would try different top tier regular 87 octane fuel brand, change oil with different brand 0W20 synthetic oil next oil change and every 5k there after. May help or may not, but was worth the try for many who got it under control doing just that.

    Good luck to all

Those videos were perfect. I confirmed with a mechanic's stethoscope from Harbor Freight that a chirp was coming from the DENSO 23101-0P020 fuel pump in the passenger's side engine bay. Was nice to hear the exact same sound from another vehicle. Thank you.
