Hey man, the only snow we see is on TV. I never even thought of the dangers of a load of snow sliding off the roof. I’m sure that could be a killer.

 

Where I grew up we had a steep 10/12 pitch metal roof, no snow stops, and a cat that used to get up on the snow covered roof. One night she rode about 16” of snow down off of the roof, yowling the whole way. Not sure if a life was used up or not, she looked the same as always the next day.

 

There's a greater risk in that specific application on a 2/12 pitch of vegetative material collecting against the snow fence, turning into soil and a tree starting to grow before snow of any significant depth or volume accumulates there.

my house has a 14/12 pitch on the main roof and even with asphalt shingles we get the roof avalanche when we get over a foot of snow that hangs up

 

You definitely get a 'lake effect ' when it does snow in your area, and its heavy wet snow i would imagine.

20 to 60 degree equivalent is 4/12 all the way to 20/12 pitch is avalanche terrain. Though the coefficient of friction between a steel painted surface vs ground/ rock is much different.Shallower than 4/12, less likely to slide, except for slippery metal roof, and steeper than 20/12 won't build up enough weight to be dangerous before sliding.

Plumber is coming next week to finish rough in which will allow me to call for my framing inspection , so I'm framing the bathroom walls

Built the shear wall today that acts to brace the long exterior wall I'm going to mount my lumber rack to and connects the timber 'truss' elements to the foundation via the hold downs on either end of this wall that sits on the interior concrete stem wall I poured .

This wall will have 1/2" plywood on the side facing the camera , nailed per the engineer's shear wall nailing schedule



Walls that are partitions I will not be able to access later to insulate are packed with XPS styrofoam prior to building the walls that abut them

 

Plumber is coming in the morning so I wanted to get my Rockwool Comfortboard insulation baffle installed in the rafter bay we will use to run the plumbing vent up to the top of the roof . I didn't want to try to install it after his vent line was in the way .

I'm using 4x8 sheets of 2" Rockwool Comfortboard 80 to make the insulation baffles . Because I will need to cut about 60 baffles eventually , I made a cutting jig to cut my 14 1/2" strips out of a piece of 3/8" plywood with a 2 x 2 fence . I just butt the fence against the sheet edge and cut along the plywood edge with my Hultafors insulation knife




Might be hard to see in the pic but the rafter bay closest to the timber rafter has the Comfortboard baffle installed . I used Schluter washers and 3" screws to hold the Comfortboard up against the little blocks I installed on the rafter sides when I framed the roof




The Comfortboard is held down 2" below top of rafter by the blocks creating an unimpeded 2" air channel from the soffit to the ridge vent and also adds R-8 to the cavity . The cavity below the Comfortboard will be filled with 7" thick High Density R-28 fibreglass batts for a combined roof R value of R-36

 

Is that comfortboard just an extra layer of insulation under the roof?

 

It serves two purposes . It acts as a baffle to provide an air channel above the code required insulation for the air from soffit to ridge which is typically done with those egg crate style R-0 Duravents , and because it is R-8 itself , it does add to the total R value of the rafter bay

Code for vaulted ceiling in my jurisdiction is R-28 , this will be R-36

 

Plumbing rough-in done today , roofer came and installed roofing boot on plumbing vent through roof . Engineer comes for review tomorrow and I'll call for my framing and plumbing rough-in inspections for next week

 

What dust collection system are you going to use? I’m getting ready to buy one now, looking at the 2HP Jet vortex with the canister filter.

 

Either Oneida 5hp Dust Gorilla Pro or Oneida 3hp V3000

V3000 probably be what I get with wall mount option and 30gal drum

Its going in the bathroom in the shop
