Long and winding story; please bear with me.

About a year ago we started looking at vehicles to replace my 2003 F-150. My wife had a small Lexus CT200 hybrid. We wanted a bigger SUV and test drove a Caddy, among others. Time went by life got busy and after 9 months or so, my wife started trying to convince me we’d be better off with a small truck. However, I continued to secretly want to buy something that would be hers too. After looking (a lot) I went on-line and “built” my dream truck. 2020 Tacoma Limited Black on Black, Tread Running Boards and Hard Tonneau Cover. On Aug 1st we applied through the Costco Auto Program and a salesman called within minutes. He said there were no exact inventory on the lots of the dealers they work with. But there was one in manufacturing that he could have brought in; 45 days out. No problem we said, and the wait was on.

Two weeks out and an update from the dealer confirmed this. Less than a week to go and we got a text that the vehicle was held up at port and it would be at least another month. BUM CITY. A few days later the dealer contacted us and said they could get one just like we wanted except it was a 4x4. We thought about it and contacted him later with an OK. The dealer said it will be there on Friday and for us to come Saturday. I was pumped!! And had a bit of a hard time sleeping too. On Friday, the dealer contacted my wife and said they sold the 4X4. OUT FROM UNDER US.

Knee jerk reaction: I went on-line and shopped SUVs again. Two days later I had picked out an Audi Q5 Prestige Package. My wife and I were at the dealer a couple of days after that. We drove it home. Really nice car.

(Now here’s where I went in the dark). Three days after driving the new car home, my wife got an apologetic text from the Toyota dealer saying the original Tacoma would be at their lot in two days. She kept this a secret and got my youngest daughter and son-in-law involved to help with the decision. In order to make it happen she was gonna have to trade in her Lexus. It turned out that my daughter wanted it so her and her husband bought it. He drove the Tacoma to his house.

Three days later; My 60th birthday.

My oldest daughter and her husband were at the house and I was busy showing of “my” new car. The garage door opened and my 2020 Black on Black Tacoma Limited with tread running boards and hard tonneau cover came pulling up the driveway. Sporting a big red bow.
After having just bought the Q5, getting the truck was the very last thing that I thought would ever happen.

I was knocked out. “My” Q5 was now my wife’s, and she had sure pulled a fast one on me! She had never done anything like it and that is a big part of the reason I…

    Love it!

I saw you went through the Costco buying service. Did the dealer offer you the "Costco price" when he was talking about the 4x4, or did you have to go back to Costco and change your order? Curious how this worked?

Haven't purchased a vehicle through a buying service, but will probably go Costco for my next new vehicle.

    Thanks!

He offered the Costco price on the 4x4 - he showed us the Costco breakdown sheet.
Costco gets you an "average" price; but there's no haggling. I HATE haggling with the dealers.
    good luck!!
