I bought a used 2.7 4x4 5 speed MT Tacoma with 30K miles on it. None of the included maintenance records indicate that the manual transmission fluid, front + rear differential fluid, or transfer case fluid have ever been changed. The maintenance schedule indicates that at the 30K service interval one could change these fluids depending on driving conditions. Well, I don't know what the previous owner(s) did or didn't do. Though the truck did have a tow hitch on it before the dealer removed it.

Would you recommend changing these fluids, or wait?

    Thanks in advance.

Maybe just the front and rear diff.

5 years 60k miles for trans and driveline fluids. Toyota doesn't specify it anymore but its a good idea.

Newer fluid will help prevent wear and leaks even if its done early.

Did my front and rear diffs at 30k. I had offroaded but not often. However the weekend prior I went through some water for a good amount of distance, so decided I should check it anyways. The black is from the drain plugs (not uncommon for initial change) the fluid wasn't terrible on either diff.

Edit: towed only a handful of times, daily driven

I would change the fluids for sure. Its fairly cheap if you do it yourself and will give you a peace of mind. That way you dont have to worry about those things for a while. Change the engine oil as well if you havent done so already.

You have got a nice truck BTW. They dont make the 4cyl with MT anymore, hold on to it.

    Good luck!

Thanks, everyone. I feel very lucky to have this now discontinued model so I want to take care of it. 4cyl with a MT is a nice compromise between power, efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

Congrats on finding one, they cancelled the 4 cylinder MT after 2017 so hang onto that one!

I'd change them now. Whenever I buy something used, I like to change all of the lubricants just for piece of mind.
You don't know if the last person changed them, under/over filled, wrong type, etc.
I'd only use quality fluids; Redline, Amsoil, OEM, Etc.
I swapped mine out early on my '18 for Redline synthetic gear oil, only to learn that the diff oils from the factory are already synthetic (so that alone is not a reason to change fluid).

Ya'll know of preferred videos or step by step instructions that you think are the best at walking through the fluid change procedures? I know there's good information here, but if you think there's a best instructional let me know. Thanks.

I did the same as Dirk. I just drained and filled around 30k.
