The smallerhead, lower wattage ones you have to cut up the meat into smaller pieces and cut out the grisle to get it to feed. Depending what cuts you use will depend on how well it will grind on the smaller units.

Thanks. I like the idea of saving 40 bucks, but I have no experience with grinders at all. Cabela's has a couple I am looking at, too, but they don't look any better or worse than these -- and free shipping. :D

Thanks. I do expect to have to cube up whatever meat I am grinding. I'd probably do it anyway to make sure I get all my spices in play on as many surfaces as possible.

How often do you plan to use it? Hand grinders blow but if you only use them a few times a year, they'll last your lifetime and are easier to clean.

If you have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer with a PTO (do they all have them?) you can get a sausage grinder attachment.

The biggest thing I can say with any meat grinder is know how cheaply the gears are made. Plastic cheap gears will shred themselves pretty quick then you're in need of finding another grinder. We went more heavy duty but spent like $300 on the grinder. Has been awesome, as said above check the auctions for good prices on commercial grade stuff. In the long run it isn't as likely to break while you're using it.

I just inherited a massive "Toledo Chopper" Meat grinder and a sausage press from my wife's Family's old butcher shop - Any recommendations on good resources to venture down the sausage making rabbit hole?

Thanks for the feedback on the grinders, everyone. Since I do plan on using one at least four or five times a month, I'll hold off and look for something more along the lines of a commercial quality product.

Commercial stuff cleans up real nice too. Everything NSF, you just know it’s Dishwasher safe. The sheer desperation of havin’ my old one (non commercial) pack it in when I got casings soaked & a sausage patch already prepared was the last straw for me.

I got my last Hobart 4822 grinder of of craigslist. I stick to only Hobart equipment because it is so easy to get parts if needed, Don't matter how old the piece of equipment is. Just enter the serial number on there website and it pulls up the prints and part numbers and can place in cart and order.

Watch your classifieds after deer season. Lot's of folks jump out there and by processing equipment and find out it's easier just to have it done.

Depends on your hunting group. 5 dudes and a set of knives and 2 grinders gets a deer down in about 2 hours and a 30 rack. He who gets the deer gets the beer. Solo takes for f'in ever.
