Sounds like u have a starter not engaging properly . Bad solenoid on the starter or not enough amperage from the battery . That would be my best guess . Have the battery load tested at batteries plus if u have one . If battery is good check solenoid .

This has been happening on my Taco too. 17 V6 Auto. Almost exactly the same. Subbed to see where this goes.

Do you have a key or a push button? I don't have a newer truck so I wont be of much help but if you have a key you could try putting it to the second position to let the fuel pump prime before you start it. If it starts better after the fuel pump primes it could help you pinpoint the area of issue.

I will say though, it does sound like the starter isn't disengaging properly. Engine fires up and that click or clunk is the starter releasing back could be sticking and not moving freely as it should. The videos where it totally sticks it actually bogs down the engine on startup causing the rough start, when the engine bogs it take the pressure off the starter enough to release it.

My Thoughts .... As the engine needs to recently shut off I'm thinking it's temp related. How about this ... hot engine is turned off and sits. Hot engine causes the unburned gas in the cylinders (from the previous ignition cutoff) to heat. When the starter is then engaged, the hot gasses immediately fire on compression (Diesel) and causes the crankshaft to turn which also takes the torque off the starters gear causing the Bendix spring to disengage the starter gear. But the engine stutters/hesitates, waiting for the injectors to fire and then the starter gear re engages until the usual start. This would explain the jumpy start, starter engagement noises .... In what climate is this happening ... hot days only??

I also have that same issue, 2018 4x4, auto. Just one of the many issues I have had with mine. Now have a burnt valve at 32000 miles. I would take back to dealer and make sure they find out what it is.

I don't know what the click is, but it sounds mechanical and not electrical, to me. However the other almost sounds as if the engine is starving for fuel briefly before fully catching. Almost as if fuel went to the cylinders, followed by a pocket of air and then normal fuel. You don't have any leaks anywhere, do you? Or codes?

    Temperature dependent?

    These would be my guesses.

    z2.jpg

Maybe the engine mounts going by noise and movement at start-up...

I mean the starter is right behind the block. If the pinion was seizing or sticking it's in a perfect location to get up to the same temperature and cool down to make the issue replicateable.

As someone else started, that’s the started not disengaging. Couple of your vids it started so quickly it didn’t surprise me with the style of starter. (Ie not one designed for auto cutoff / start when in traffic).
First I’d check the starter bolts, if one is loose the starter may be clocked slightly during the strain of starting causing it to stick on slightly too long.
Second all the wiring to the starter.
    Third all the ignition wiring.
Battery could also cause this, but it’s so erratic that I don’t think a load test would pick that up, as it does seem heat related, so if all wiring looks good, replace the battery.
It doesn’t seem like the solenoid, but rather the wiring to it. But that would be next.

If you could get dealer to replace the starter, during that process they would pretty much have to check all the above, so that might be the best cause of action.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I have checked a few easy things like battery load test and improper grounds; however, I have an appointment with Toyota service tomorrow and since my truck is still well under warranty I don’t want to mess around too much. I plan to show them the video and suggest a few things from this thread. I will definitely post back with the results and whether it is fixed long term.

Wondering if you've OVtuned your truck? Mine does this exact same thing seems like it just started after I OVTuned the truck. Could be coincidence

Nope, only thing I’ve done that maybe would have affected anything was the raptor lights fuse tap to the INJ fuse. Although, I highly doubt that would have caused this. Seems much more likely that a part would have just failed. Keeping in mind that there are maybe 30 or 40 thousand parts on a single truck, there is a lot of room for one part to fail on a brand new vehicle here and there, even ones made by the most reliable companies. I’m trying to keep in mind that I probably just got unlucky and that the truck is not flawed by design.

Your starter is definitely engaging too long. If you’re holding the key too long that’s your fault. If it’s staying engaged after your turned it from the start position then the solenoid is sticking.
