Too much rubbing, smaller tire?

I’m running 285/70r17 with around a 2” lift in front and aal in the rear. They rub a ton on the plastic after much trimming when I take sharper turns or while on a dip with -12.5 offset. Can I just get 275/70r17s to avoid more rubbing and a chop?

It'll help but it might still rub a little bit but since you've already trimmed some you will probably be fine. BTW lift doesn't affect rubbing at all unless you never plan on going over a speed bump or compressing the suspension.

I have the same problem, I went from 265/70/17 to 285/70/17 and they rubbed like crazy, I had to trim a little bit of the plastic, I recently lifted the truck to 3” in the front and now when I go over a large dip they don’t rub. However they do rub like crazy when backing up with the tires pointing to the left, but that’s due to the fact one of the mounting points for the fender liner got ripped off so it hangs a little. It’s just one of those things you’re going to have to deal with having larger tires. I just had a friend help my by turning the tires each way until I found where the tires made contact every time and just trimmed those areas.

Yeah true. I’m just really not liking my side wall getting eaten up not only on the plastic but smaller areas of the cab and fender. I’m thinking if I get a smaller tire in width and diameter it’d help with those issues.

said it before n will say it again, lift size is not the determining factor of max tire size on our truck. The wheel well just physically doesnt fit a 285/75R16 or 285/70R17. largest you can go would be a 265/75R16 or MAYBE if you are lucky with a spot on alignment a 255/85R16

Where is it rubbing? You'll typically need to get your alignment shop to get you close to 3 degrees of positive caster and then look up the body mount chop. I'm running a small lift wheel often with no rubbing. I've done no cutting on the fenders or inner wheel well.

If go 3” and want a 285 gonna have to get aftermarket ucas and push caster to at least 3* but imo 4 is great. That’s what I run and zero rubbing and no cmc. No issues on light trails as it’s a Prerunner.

I have aftermarket Light Racing JBA UCA’s otherwise they’d make contact. I think my caster needs to be set at a better degree or something. But I’m getting rub on the plastic behind the tire and a bit behind the plastic liner behind it but that’s metal when going down a dip while turning, up a slope turning and while reversing.. I don’t know if achieving a higher lift would be the fix then, I thought I’d get 3” but they settled around 2.5”unfortunately. But as I do light off-roading every now and then with billies 5100 all around I won’t be doing any heavy flexing. Would a different UCA be able to get me a better caster? Smaller tire, or just chop the dang thing?

This is why you rub. OEM wheels are around +30 mm offset, so your tires are stick out ~1.6 inches more than stock. When steering, that tire is swinging over a 1.6 inches wider arc.

275/70r17 would rub less because it's a smaller 32" tire, while you have 33" tires now.

Do you have Light Racing or JBA UCAs? If Light Racing (aka SPC), you can try redoing the alignment to improve clearance. If JBA (i.e. non-adjustable), start cutting more plastic.

Gotcha, so my offset is incorrect for the size I have after my lift. I have JBA UCA’s right now sorry for the confusion. Now because I usually drive on City/Hwy roads 85% of the time, would a smaller tire be better for those light trails or dives in turning down a road would help save my side walls or just getting some adjustable UCA’s?

You can get 4* caster with the JBAs all day. That’s plenty.

Alright, I’ll have it aligned then. I hope that will help with the rubbing!

Caster, camber then toe in that order.

No. Caster, toe, camber, then re-check toe... The reason: the inclined steering axis causes camber gain unless the wheels are pointing straight ahead.
