Be QUIET! or... how to sound-proof your Taco cab

Doing the carpets is super easy. It's almost just sitting there held down by the plastic trim pieces.

Using my sound meter at 70 mph on a smooth highway , the meter recorded approx 70 decibals of road noise
After sound deadening the complete truck , the sound meter recorded 55 decibals of road noise .
Yes it makes a big difference . For anyone with a high powered system , its worth it

 

Swiped the Dynamat Xtreme from the stereo install package I bought for my wife. LOL. Removed the seats & hardware and layered the entire back wall with it. After a 1700mi trip I can confirm that this was a great mod. HUGE difference in the noticeable sound from the back. However, as others have mentioned, you almost instantly begin to hear other areas throughout the rig that are the next 'weak link' in the chain. Next summer I'll be on my motorcycle and can afford to put the truck in drydock for an extended period in order to strip it out. At that time I will put a second, thicker layer in that back wall for good measure. And going forward I will do two differing thicknesses when I tackle the access & front doors, floor pan and roof. I don't have a thunderous sound system like many others who've done this mod; I just appreciate a quiet vehicle where you can talk to others in your rig without having to shout to be heard over annoying background road noise.

This reminds me... anyone know where I can get a sizeable supply of those red snap fasteners that secure the back wall panels? Most came through removal / reinstall without a hitch but a couple were skanked in the process. More will undoubtedly disintegrate when I pull that out again for a second quieting layer. I'd like to have a sizeable supply on hand when I do that --- and for the rest of the panel pieces throughout the cab. Are they all the same size/type, or are they different? Forgive this question if it seems ignorant. (Noob alert. LOL.)

 

Aren't peeps fluid filming their doors so would this sound reduction material stick to the wax ?

 

I actually contacted my local Corrosion Free application shop to ask them this exact question. He could not say for sure, but strongly suggested that the sound deadening material be applied BEFORE any rust proofing is attempted. It seems unlikely that the self-adhesive insulation pieces would stick properly to areas treated with liquid/oily type rust inhibitors. I am doing the Dynamat thing first... then getting the Corrosion Free treatment. I can't NOT do the rust protection thing; it's what killed my last 2 rigs. I will not sacrifice the Tacoma to save a few dollars and have no intention of repeating that same mistake again. Besides, I don't see that the rust-proofing stuff will hurt the Dynamat once it's already applied and has had a time to "settle in". After both are in/on for a while I'll check back in and give a full report on how and whether or not things worked out.

How many square feet are needed to do the whole cab, minus the roof? And then how many square feet for the roof?

 

A great question! Surely someone who's done this was OCD enough to have calculated the exact square footage required to do a total access cab sound-dampening so that they wouldn't buy too much / not enough.

Not that I'd need it. There's always some sort of something or other I can find to put any remaining insulation into. I've previously done the underside of both of my riding lawn mower engine hoods, and it made a WORLD of difference. Leftovers (of ANY kind) never go to waste around my house. LOL

 

Well, I went ahead and ordered a complete double cab kit from Second Skin. Comes with MLV and thin sheets... 72 sq/ft of Luxury Liner Pro and 120sq/ft of Damplifier Pro. Should be enough to do the entire cab. I will be interested to see what kind of difference this makes, cause man my cab is noisy as all get out. Switching over to winter tires soon, so that will help some, but if I can make it more solid inside the cab, it will be a win. Pricey endeavor though... hope it's worth it. Not happy about adding more than 135lbs to the platform though /sigh

 

I would get a few rattle cans and spray the inside of the doors yourself while they are open and tell the shop to skip the doors.

As a bonus, they won't spray their product all over the back of your speakers which I believe are exposed in the doors.

I have a rattle inside the cab at the junction between the passenger A pillar and the front dash speaker grille. Does anyone have ideas on what type of product might work to eliminate the noise?

 

It's super low tech, but I just folded up a piece of paper and shoved it down in there. It's hardly noticeable, and the rattle is gone now.

if it’s due to plastic rubbing, maybe Tessa tape on one of the surfaces
