Where are my fellow bird hunters? Duck season just opened, how did everyone do on opening weekend? I was stuck at home this weekend working on the boat and painting decoys so let me see those pictures. Not much water up here in Humboldt at the moment so until rain, refuge and bottomlands are slow going. But I feel real good about these hand painted wigeon

I went down to Suisun and there were tons of hunters moving birds around but for the most part, everything was miles in the sky. I only took two shots on Saturday morning and one on Sunday morning. I am afraid it will be dead until we get some weather up north. I heard some people did great but only lucky passing shots for the most part.

Talked to a few guys up here, most guys said it was slow but a few folks in the northern part of Humboldt bay got limits. Agreed about the weather. A buddy limited out at Delevan on Saturday.

    Some really cool shit
Used to do some duck hunting a few years back. I sucked at it. Working full time put a bit of a damper on that activity.
Had a great dog for it.

He's 15 now so those days are over.

    Now I just pheasant hunt.
Have a great dog for that, as well.

Great looking dogs. My German Heeler in the picture could make a good hunting dog if he wasn't so darn gun shy haha

I love opening day but didn’t make it out. Most opening days are blue bird weather and few birds. I go because it’s a tradition but the success rate is often poor. I generally pheasant my club until mid to late November and then go after the ducks.
Here’s my duck and pheasant dog Sprig next to my blind searching the horizon for ducks. I forgot his camo collar that day and left his red collar on. We limited that day so the red collar didn’t seem to flare any birds. My partners gave me shit for the red collar. C85F83F5-5BCA-4A34-89D6-06393C2E8C7B.jpg

Duck hunting in PA was slow for us compared to last year on opening day. Few wood ducks flying complimented with a few mergansers. Switched up locations the following Saturday slightly better wood duck numbers and few mallards. Didn't help it was 70 degrees either. Hopefully by the time duck comes back in in PA some colder weather will push more birds down from up north. Tons of honkers around though.

Haven’t gone out for ducks since I lived in Mass. Been primarily hitting turkeys and partridge then swapping over to deer by early November. I’d like to get another lab soon to train up.
