2014 Tacoma, are the low and high beam bulb questions

Hello all,

The hid headlights on my brother in laws 2014 Tacoma have stopped working and I need to replace them so my sister can use the truck still. I want just throw in some normal halogens but am unclear about the low and high beams. I see both the low and highs use a 9003/H4 bulb. Is it just one bulb that acts as both, or do I need two separate pairs of H4 bulbs? If so, can I use the same exact bulb for both? Sorry if this information is obvious. Any info greatly appreciated.

 

if they are just drop in HID bulbs they can be replaced with the stock 9003 bulb which is a dual beam for high and low beams. You will need to remove the HID ballasts and plug the factory 9003 plug into the 9003 bulbs.

 

Thanks for the reply. Okay that’s what I suspected. So just to the confirm, the low and highs are just one bulb correct? Is there a special type of 9003/H4 I need, or will any standard 9003/H4 halogen work fine for the dual setup?

 

I too have a 2014 Tacoma, so I can help you. As has already been stated, the stock (halogen) bulb is a 9003/H4. If you're just looking for "normal" performance, go to your local parts store and buy whatever 9003/H4 bulb you want. There are higher performance bulbs available, but it doesn't sound like you need them right now. Buy one pair and the high and low beams are in each bulb.

 

That is correct, any 9003 H4 bulb will work.

 

Great, this confirmed what I thought. Just wanted to make sure before I bought anytime. Would you recommend taking out the windshield washer reservoir, or the entire headlight to install the passenger side? I noticed the space is very tight for installing them on that side. Thanks a ton for the info.

 

Okay great, just ordered some Philips H4s. Thanks so much for the info.

 

Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the tank in place, then rotate it out of the way. Some folks even remove the three 10mm bolts that hold the power steering reservoir down and move it slightly out of the way too. Be very, very careful with the wire retaining clip that's under the rubber boot and holds the bulb in place. If you've never changed that bulb before, I'd recommend taking a closeup picture of how the clip goes in because they have a habit of falling out. (Ask me how I know that.) The picture will show you how to get everything back in place. And as always, do not touch the glass portion of the bulb. This message will self destruct in 10 seconds. Good luck Jim.

PS: Do not remove the headlight housing. It's way too difficult.

 

Okay great, I will just remove the two bolts that hold the windshield washer reservoir. I actually already removed the old bulbs and was about to install the original old halogen bulbs. It was so hard to get that clip in place without dropping it down the gap, and while keeping the bulb held in place. I then decided if I was gonna go through the effort of removing things to install it, we mine as well at least get new bulbs, so that’s why I was asking here. I took a picture of the other side so Ill remember how the retaining clip goes back in. Thanks so much for all the tips, I very much appreciate it.
