I'm looking to get into overlanding in the future but for now I want to take some off road trails in my tacoma. I am reaching out to see what you guys think a stock 2020 trd off road is capable of as well as small upgrades you think are needed right of the bat. Aside from recovery gear I was thinking about some K02 tires that fit with stock suspension, maybe some skid plates and rock sliders. What are your thoughts ?

You're on the right path.. skids, sliders and a little more aggressive tire are good starting points.
A little extra light doesn't hurt with a bumper mounted light bar (hidden or exposed).

Depends on the trails. If you need sliders you probably want underside armor which means suspension upgrade to handle the weight. In stock form it will go more places than most people will have the comfort to take them. So unless you’re planning on thrashing your new truck, drive it stock and pick lines that won’t have you dragging over boulders and you will be fine. Tire upgrade if muddy hills would be a good though, one size up will fit usually without any rubbing.

It's great. Rear locker, atrac(mts) and good clearance. New tires are a great first upgrade. Armor depends on what trails you intend to take, but skids and sliders are relatively inexpensive insurance.

A stock Tacoma will take you further than your courage will. It's truly scary what a stock vehicle with the right driver will do. My advice is to learn how to drive off road before making any mods. Successful offroading is 90% driver and 10% vehicle. However, nobody wants to hear that fact. They think with enough mods, they can do anything. Nothing can be further from the truth. If you suck with stock, you will still suck with mods. Learn. Practice. Then make mods to suit.

    - ICON UCAs, BP51/Kings, SCS wheels, 285s, Leer 100XR canopy. Greenlane aluminum winch bumper, Smittybilt X20 winch. Trying Falken AT3w now, Really like BF KO2s.
You have an awesome truck, upgrade your tires to 265 75 16 C load or E Load and you’re good to go.
I really like KO2s, ST Maxx, Duratrac, Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Cant really go wrong.
Sliders are a great idea and for skids if your not doing hard stuff you could go with aluminum to keep weight down.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
Tires. That's about the only thing I'd say the truck is lacking. Mechanically from there you can go years without the truck holding you back.

I’d echo what a lot of people are saying. Wheel it as is and modify where you feel the truck needs improvement. Tires are probably the best bang for the buck. I personally went with C-load 265/75/16. Surprisingly capable granted it’s not Wrangler Rubicon on 37’s. Enjoy!

OP, where are you going four wheeling? I was surprised how well my bone stock Off-road did the first time I had it out, It kept up fine with my buddies 2 door JK and 4 door JL, both Rubicons on 33s. With good tire placement you can get over a lot more stuff than you would think, that being said I was used to wheeling a GMC Sierra around, so the Tacoma feels like a gokart in comparison.
Take it out stock first and have some fun.

Take it out stock. Coming from no 4x4 experience, I was absolutely amazed what the truck could do.

After taking it out on more and more difficult trails I ended up dialing back the amount of upgrades I plan to buy.

Just get out there. You don’t need any upgrades. If anything, bring some traction boards and a shovel. It also really depends on what type of trails you want to explore. If you still want yo upgrade, you should drive it stock first so you know the difference between stock and your upgrade. Albeit. I suggest not slamming your rocker panel into a boulder unless you have rock sliders. :)
