Bought the 2021 Tacoma of my dreams and 2 days later bought the leer mid rise cap for over the bed and installed temporary platform to get a weekend camping trip in less than 5 days of purchase. Now I need to purchase a rack to carry surfboards. Guess I shouldn't have bought the tonneau cover. Any recommendations and insight are welcomed.

We did install supports as a temporary for the bed. Will explore the forums for bed build with drawers as that is my next dream. This was just temporary.

A Yakima Rack will sit higher than the Toyota rack and then once you add on the board holders/mounts, it will probably be higher than the top of the shell.

Great. I was looking at the Yakima. Will explore that further.

Went from 3rd Gen Taco to 3GT4R to 2nd Gen Taco and finally a V8 4GT4R.
Gotta invest in some heavier leaf packs!

You can use side-mounted gutter plates (rather than tracks on top) to get the rack down lower.

Using the side mounted gutter plates how does that affect weight capacity. Looking to carry surfboard, paddle board, and stand up kayak. The stand up kayak is a beast.

I don't think you'd have a problem with that load. My cap is a snugtop with the sportsmans package that has extra glass in the corners (and a thicker roof) to support a heavier load. Before tracks were a thing, everyone used gutter plates on their caps. They may be less likely to leak over time, since the holes are on the side, not top. Use a little silicone at the base of the bolts when installing.
These are rhino brand plates with 3 holes each. I'd get beefy crossbars, like Yakima HD.
