What is it about the Tacoma that winch fairleads have to be angled?

One of the major annoyances I have with front Bumpers for the Tacoma is the way the winch is mounted in relation to the fairlead mount. Its angled. Does that have any affect on winching and why aren't there many bumps with fairlead mounted flush to the winch location?
