I am by no means an expert so grain of salt but. JMO your engine has some sort of internal issue thats not going to be solved by any additives. Probably doing more harm then good with the additives. So drive her till she dies,or take apart/ replace the engine.

Are you sure its the lifters?

    Your engine doesn't have lifters.

The engine uses hydraulic valve lash adjusters.
If it's what is causing the noise, they need to be replaced. There is no adjustment.

My truck makes the same noise (although not as loud) and only when it's cold outside (like right now).

No amount of additives are going to help.

The 2TR-FE does in fact have hydraulic lash adjusters ( Lifters ).

Maybe he has a sludged up engine...

I think its the lash adjusters. So there is nothing I can do but to replace them? I was hoping I can reach the adjusters without out taking the front cover off.

the reason why i think its the lash adjusters is because the noise goes away after 2000 rpm.

Connect a decent scanner and check, at idle, for parameters that are far from spec. I'm actually surprised you don't have a CEL, with all that noise going on. If you're sure the noise is coming from the top of the engine, another possibility would be something sketchy in the VVT system. If maintenance has been poor (or was before you bought the truck), or the wrong oil is (or was) being used, you could have plugged VVT orifices, or the VVT filter screen could be gummed up.

EDIT: Another possibility of course would be the VVT solenoid, but I've never heard of one causing your symptoms, so...

OP pull the valve cover, take some pics and let's see what it looks like in there. If there is a bunch of sludge you may have other issues than a noisy lifter. Or something more obvious.

Are you absolutely sure the cat (or cats) is/are the direct cause of that CEL? I've seen lots of people get dragged down long, expensive rabbit trails by codes that point to a cat but the root cause is something else entirely. I'm especially suspicious in the context of the top end noise. If you have something like a stuck valve and/or a constant over-rich condition, that could destroy a cat over time.

the cats have been bad for few months now before the noise. It throws a cat code on the scanner too.

I would not be so sure it's the hydraulic valve adjusters... maybe, maybe not. You've had the valve cover off and everything looks OK. Without more info, I would take it to a reputable shop and ask for a proper diagnosis, shouldn't take them too long to find the problem with all that racket going on. I would hate to pony up the money and time to replace something only to find out that isn't the problem. Good luck.

The 2TR-FE is still a fairly simple engine and one of the most reliable they have ever built.

I don't see why anyone would have an issue with hydraulic lash adjusters ( Hydraulic lifters ). They work great as long as you don't sludge the engine. I don't think he has a problem with the lash adjusters. I would guess a chain issue or Chain guide or adjuster.

The beauty of hydraulic lifters are that you never have to adjust them (like mechanical lifters) once they are up and running. Mechanical lifters need adjustment every X number of miles. I think the K-24 in my TSX requires adjustments every 100K miles.
