It's my boyfriend's truck.. he's got a 2" lift on it, bigger tires, etc
I'm looking for the boyfriend. we've been looking on craigslist and facebook marketplace.. he's frugal :) I don't know what i'm looking for in caps, especially when most ads don't list dimensions. ("it's for a 6' bed..." and?)

We are located on the MA/NH border. If you don't know of one.. if you know if we can mod one to fit that is available? Are they mod-able?

Toppers tend to be pretty vehicle specific these days. Each truck bed seems to have unique quirks that aren't compatible with toppers made for other vehicles. That being said, sure, you can put different toppers on the back of a Tacoma, it just won't fit very well and you might have to come up with some custom clamps or weather stripping along the sides.

In the first picture below, you can see my 2018 Tacoma long bed with a topper that was made for a 2001 Chevy S-10. I only used it because the dealership didn't care whether the S-10 that I was trading in had the topper on it or not. They offered me the same trade in price either way. So I had nothing to lose trying to retrofit it to my new Tacoma. It didn't fit very well as it was several inches too short, several inches too narrow, and had a flat back window that did not align with the Tacoma's curved tailgate. I had to jankily weatherproof the crap out of it, but considering it was "free", the effort was worth it to me. Also, it was pure luck that the height of the topper matched the height of the Tacoma cab. There's a good chance that used toppers made for other trucks will be slightly taller than the Tacoma cab... which looks kind of silly and also catches the wind.

The second picture shows my Tacoma with an ARE MX topper that is specific to Tacoma long beds. It fits much better, is more weatherproof, and much more convenient overall. I also lurked on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace for a long time looking for a used one. The absolute best deal that I was able to find on a used topper was still $1,100. Ultimately though, a local shop had a hell of a sale, and I bought a brand new one for about $2,000. Make sure that you look for a 2016+ (3rd gen) long bed Tacoma toppers. Most likely you are going to pay $1,200 - 2,000 even for a used one. You might get lucky and find one cheaper, but they don't pop up very often.

Hopefully that provides a little bit of insight. Good luck!

Does anybody know what the pitfalls are of putting a 2015 6' bed Chevy Colorado topper on a 2017 6' bed access cab Tacoma? Thanks for any info.
