Son in law graduated from the Coast Guard Academy, and they are stationed at the mouth of the Columbia. My daughter is a bit bored because she wants more city life, but they are happy and the place they live is gorgeous. He goes out along the NW coast, but is only out 4-5 days MAX, mostly shorter. My dad was in the AF and loved it. I never joined and sort of regret it frankly. But I work with a lot of vets, have for years. Fun times, exciting times, yes some scary times - but also a lot of waiting times.

    Work in progress...
I was up in Seattle waiting for my ship, USS Vangegrift FFG-48, to be built. I was at Sand Point and housed with the Coast Guard. I got to go on the ice beaker Polor Star and a couple of cutters. The patrol craft were what I really loved. I would enlist in the Coast Guard today if I could get the Puget Sound area and you know ...if they would take a 55 year old man.

You wanna drive a V6 charger, mustang, or Camaro with a 29% interest rate then military is for you.

Honestly only you can decide that, it was great for me as a entrance and stepping stone for my career. If I hadn’t joined I know I’d be working at a dead end job and starving.

I did 20 years in the Air Force, Combat Camera and a stint as a Military Training Instructor. It was a good career, I got a lot from it, but it came with a lot of ass pain.

Yet the guy I quoted brought the political BS into the thread. I assume you work for Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc with your selective quoting.

I don't know what you're getting at. Helicopters are pretty neat though.

You do realize that you and I have been arguing on diametrically opposite points of view this entire thread though, right?

That’s a tough decision that only you can make. It depends on what you want to get out of it. I wanted to travel and learn a trade so I chose the Navy. I hated it at first but I chose to make the best of it and stayed in for 10 years. That training allowed me to have the job i have now running a power plant with a secure future. I was able to purchase my military time and apply that to my state time so I will have a bigger pension when I retire.

Bottom line, learn a skill that will give you a future that you enjoy.

I lost my train of thought . I think most iraq/afghanistan vets are highly susceptible to becoming alcoholics what do you think?

Have a long-term career goal and see if enlisting contributes to that goal.
Want to be a PMC or do force protection / bodyguard work? Joining the military might be for you - free training and you get to serve your country.
Want to be a hedge fund mangler on Wall St.? Be sure to pick an appropriate college major.

Remember your youth is limited. After 18, your body is physically going downhill. Think it through whichever way before committing 4 years or whatever to it.

Summed me up completely, that's why I ended up going in at 26. Basic training sucks the older you are there.

I have no dog in the fight one way or the other. There are some valid reasons for some young people to choose military service, and there some valid reasons for others not to choose service. If you want to serve, serve. I have no ill will towards anyone that wants to fight to protect our country. What I do have some disagreement with is young people being cajoled into joining up when they aren't fully prepared to make that decision. Our .mil is pretty good at convincing young folks that their only path to success in life is running out to the front line and catching bullets. Not fair to those kids, even though the military needs bullet sponges.
