One of my best friends growing up joined up his junior year of hs (was held back a year). The airforce did something to him and he ended up in the loony bin. Was medically discharged after 2 years. Got out and killed himself with a .45 2 years later.

on the other hand, my best friend is in the navy and has had some crazy medical issues where he’ll seize, black out, have panic attacks, etc, and he is still collecting a paycheck off of the govt. and has great medical insurance...

My 2 cents is that if you’re not passionate for it, don’t join.

Go to college and invest in yourself, JC first then get your Bachelors Degree. Do what you like because you will be doing it for many years and make sure you will make enough money to be happy and able to support your future family. An educated person is better than being Un educated person. No one can ever take that knowledge away from you!

Neither. Bad idea. Retreat. Maybe the air force.

Not going to lie. If I were to come out of high school again and didn't make it to MLB, I would consider Air Force or Navy. Have you tried looking into Space Force?

There is a higher statistical probability that your “minor” defect will worsen at a more rapid rate over a shorter time span rendering you incapable of landing on the boat. Hence millions of dollars wasted in training an inferior candidate with a lower potential lifespan in a highly competitive arena. Your bitterness is misplaced. There is a high statistical probability you would not have even made it to jets even if you dared to take a chance to enter into the pipeline and attempted to qualify for anything in Naval aviation. You were not everything the Navy wanted and now you are just bitter...because you did not even try. Stop adding bad advice.

Your last two sentences are proof positive how misguided, wrong and ignorant you are. Thank god my dear Navy rejected you.

He may not have even made it out of primary and never earned wings before being DQ’d and sent to supply school.

We’re supposed to talk to a recruiter on Saturday but my wife isn’t happy about it. I’m trying to explain to her how much better it would be if we were involved instead of just letting him make a fly by night decision as soon as he’s 18.

As long as there are better qualified people they will pass the others. Flying supersonic jets is a fairly special job that pays more than $15 per hour.

The jets are bad ass and I wish I could just ride in one but I honestly like the helicopters, all of them. They fly down the coast when I’m walking the beach low and slow enough to make eye contact and wave. Probably looking for boobs.

My question to the OP, if you don’t go into the military, what are you’re plans?
Work, what are you good at?
Trade school, what type of job do you want?
College, what do you plan to study? And do you have the money to go?

I am now 62 years old. While in high school I signed up, the week after I turned 18. My parents had the money for me to go to school, but I didn’t like high school that much, so why go to school for another 4 years. I did 4 years in the Air Force as a C130 aviation tech, loved working on airplanes. I got to travel, spent about a year TDY in England, 4 weeks in Goosebay Labrador and other places. I had planned to make a life of the military, but in my last year I had an a$$ of a commander and I didn’t want that again. Problem is that happens in all business at some time or another. I got out, went to college and ended up not using what I got my degree in, I became an Air Traffic Controller and retired at 56. For me the Air Force was great move.

guessing your about 17, man if you knew what you want to do with your life, that’s great, I don’t think most do. If you choose the military, ask questions, think about what you might like to do, research jobs and see what might fit you. After you visit and talk, go home and think about it. Not something to take lightly. I wish you the best in what comes next for you.

I should add, I believe the 4 years in the Air Force, gave me time to grown and I think I would of wasted my parents money going straight into college.

My $.02 worth for you or anyone considering enlisting in the military, if you can, go to college first! That is if you have the means and the aptitude for school, go, as not everyone does. If you get through school with your degree and you still want to join you can try to join the military as an officer. Maybe get into ROTC classes, it will certainly help to get in as an O. The pay and working conditions are typically a lot better as an "O" than being enlisted. If you don't have the aptitude or the means to pay for college, the military is a good place to learn and earn both. When I graduated HS, I could have come up with the means to pay for school. But I completely lacked the aptitude necessary for college, 20+ years later I went to college after the military taught me what's necessary to be a good student. I'm now 30 years post-HS and working towards my master's degree and it has all been paid for with the GI Bill. I do not regret enlisting, but I know most of the people I compete with today for jobs are half my age. If I had gone to college 20+ years ago my advancement today would likely be further than it was starting over as a new college graduate at 45. So I can say going to college earlier in life is typically more beneficial than going later.

To emphasize my point on the pay, "O"s start at twice the pay as "E"s do. You have to be an E5 w/8 years or and E6 w/6 years experience before you get paid what an "O" starts at.

I've been in the military for 11 years now and it was the best decision I've ever made. Our backgrounds are probably completely different but I've enjoyed service. Seen the world, made life long friends and met my wife in Europe. I would do it again.
