    Hi all,

The time has come to get another Toyota...my 1997 4Runner 4WD SR5 that I bought new here in Arizona (no rust!) and still only has 109K miles on it is starting to show signs of old age (just like myself!) and I am giving serious thought to a 3rd generation Tacoma.

This will be the first time I will have bought any vehicle in the nearly 24 years since I got the 4Runner, so I assume things have changed a lot since then :).

So far I've found a few 2017s that I like...I want the Inferno Orange in the TRD Sport or Off Road. Long bed would be nice, but I don't know if it would fit in my garage. Trailer towing package is required as is Entune premium. I don't like leather seats...here in the Phoenix AZ area they are hot and sticky during our endless summers. 4WD would be nice, but I intend to keep the 4Runner so if I need 4WD for anything I'll use it. Staying with 2WD on the Tacoma would keep the price lower and less to go wrong.

One local dealer (in Tempe) has a short bed 2WD that is close to what I want, and Carvana in Tempe also has one that is close. I am in no rush whatsoever, and I am just starting to do research and see what all is out there, pricing, etc. Unless I come across a killer deal soon, I am thinking next spring sometime might be better - hopefully prices will be a little more reasonable.

The CarFax on the Tempe dealer shows an accident on the right rear, but the title is clean so the damage must not have been too severe, and it is a Toyota Certified Used Vehicle. Mileage is a bit more than I would like....44K.

The Carvana one shows no accidents, but seems to have several nicks and dings, and also only has one key. I think those newer keys are rather expensive to replace....

Being that I am old school I want it to have a CD player...I don't understand why the newer ones don't have them. Yes I could rip my CDs to FLAC files on a USB stick, but that is a lot of work and time.

Any thing I should be aware of on the 2017s? Weak spots, things to look for, etc. I am aware of the fuel pump recall.

    Thanks for your help!

2017 is a great year, but I'm bias. There's no TSS so aftermarket bumpers are easy. You can get an access cab LB which is the same wheelbase and overall length of the dcsb. The fuel pump recall is for Sept 2017 built and newer. The only recall I've had is the AC dash fan.

If you sell your 4R, I'd do it private party, you may get upwards of $15k (limited, I see you have sr5), but they sell for crazy prices especially with no rust from AZ.

If you're not in a rush, wait it out,,,used prices are stupid,, there's a shortage right now.

Thanks for the info...here are links to the 2 that I am considering now:

    https://www.autonationtoyotatempe.c...a-Tacoma-63fe38bf0a0d0cc725deecc25f129ca7.htm

The stains/marks on the engine cover concern me...has something leaked? It is listed as a Certified Used Vehicle...does the warranty come with it, or is it extra cost? I can't seem to find much info on it. I did find something called a VSA from Toyota which is extra cost, of course. Carfax shows some accident damage to the right rear, although with a clean title I assume that the damage wasn't that bad.

I haven't set foot on a dealer's lot for nearly 24 years, but I presume there are still packs of vultures waiting to pounce on anyone who walks in :) Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday (I am off work these days) I might casually wander down that way and see.

The other Tacoma is here on Carvana:

    https://www.carvana.com/vehicle/1548969

It seems to have enough chips and scratches plus it doesn't have the JBL audio that I'd like. They have dropped the price 1K in the last week. A friend of mine has bought and sold several cars with Carvana and was very happy with them.

A private sale on CraigsList for a 2018 SR5 2WD in bright blue with 14K miles without many options has already dropped 5K...so maybe prices are starting to go down a bit.

Thanks again for any and all comments!

It's just a hack job of putting crappy armorall or some other greasy product on the engine bay plastics/rubber to make it look new.

First one is pretty sharp, @rlx02 is right, just the porter got whacky and inconsistent with the tire shine.
Second on Carvana is gone already, but if it looked all scratched up from pics, it probably looks even worse in person.

    Hi all again,

I see that the Carvana Tacoma didn't stay sold too long....but no matter. I take delivery of the 2017 Tacoma linked above from AutoNation Friday morning! I spent several hours there this morning looking it over, test driving it, taking photos, etc.

It isn't perfect...I did find a couple of scratches on it, but not bad. Having the JBL audio and trailer towing package made a difference, and it also has new tires and brakes. First time that I've bought any vehicle since May of 1997 when I bought the 4Runner new. Plus it was 1K less than the Carvana one, which doesn't have JBL or towing package, but less miles. The AutoNation one is also a Totoya CPO which is nice as well.

The salesman was eyeing up the 4Runner and commenting how good it looks, and seemed disappointed when I said that I was going to keep it. Should I decide to sell it later, I'll do so privately. I think that being bought new here in AZ and never exposed to road salt, no accidents and with only 110K miles it should bring a decent price.

I'm sure that once I get a few miles on the Tacoma I'll have questions about it...after all, this truck is 20 model years newer and loaded with features that were unheard of back in 1997 when I got the 4Runner.

Looking forward to Friday morning.... :)

$30,800 and $32,000 for 2017 rear wheel drive Tacoma’s is to much money . That has to be close to price for a new 2 wheel drive Tacoma .

When you get the 17 you can buy a size 13 rubber wedding ring to fit over the stereo volume control which is probably the dumbest edition to this thread.

My 2017 has been great. Less complicated as it doesn't have all of the TSS stuff introduced to the 2018 model. Also the non-JBLs have CD players.

$30,800 and $32,000 is a lot to spend. That's more than I paid for mine new.

My 2017 just started leaking at the third brake light when it rains. Seems like an easy enough fix ($120 part + an hour or so of work), but apparently enough trucks had the problem that Toyota put out a TSB. Just something to watch out for on the earlier 3rd gen.

I got the truck earlier today...so far so good! And the JBL system sounds really good and it does have a CD player.

All of the XM channels are active...wonder how long that will last!

I got the one from AutoNation Toyota Tempe and OTD was about 34K with Arizona's outrageous high license plates and sales tax.

Now that I am getting a few miles on the new truck I notice a couple of things...it does seem like the engine makes more noise when working hard...more so than my 1997 4Runner on the same roads. Of course that may be normal for the Tacoma being heavier and bigger than the 4Runner and with about the same size engine.

The steering seems to be a bit lighter (less effort) and fairly quick. Of course the 4Runner is 20 years older and likely worn a bit (although only 109K miles on it).

I did find a brochure in the glove box from XM Radio saying that the dealer had activated a 3 month all channel trial subscription. I doubt that I will subscribe though...more often than not I don't have any radio or CD playing when in city traffic, and with the current virus situation it may be a while before I can take a long road trip again.
