Stock MPG vs Wheels/Tires

2017 5 speed 2.7 4x4 acces cab

After going from a 30 to a 32 AT wildpeak, and removing my air dam, I went from 25mpg to about 22. After a 2" lift I get 20-21.Who knows what will happen when this slimline and winch go on in a month

Done my fair share of getting off road, but at 20 years old making a 32mi commute to work both ways I’m also trying make sure I don’t turn a $33,000 truck into a money pit. Planning to put on 32” Falken AT3W tires on with 16x8 SCS Ray10s. None of my Tacoma’s have stayed stock, and I don’t plan to keep this one stock either but I don’t plan to sacrifice practicality either

 

I don't have a before number as they went on almost immediately after initial purchase, but I'm getting around 15-16mpg on Nitto 265/65/17 Trail Grapplers.
@ 40lbs, these are a relatively lightweight tire.

I'm running wheels that are pretty much equivalent to the factory Sport wheel weight.

 

This is my full load (a bunch of gear in the bed also) and I'm getting about 15-16mpg also. As long as you get a proper suspension, wheel/tire, and rack setup MPG will only slightly be affected!

 

32 mile commute? That's cute! haha. I have a 100 mile daily commute (round trip). But I also don't drive my Tacoma daily. I have a 2005 Jeep Cherokee with >200,000 miles as my daily commuter.

Truth be told, I could probably squeeze out a couple more MPG's just by bumping up tire pressure, but keeping inflation perpetually on the low side makes it a lot easier to live with the Sport suspension on the trails. I live on the TAT, so everything is secondary to an enjoyable ride.

 

DCLB OR. Got around 20 when stock.
lost 1mpg with lift(2") and wheels and tires(17" wheels and 255/80 St maxx)
lost 1 mpg with roof rack.

Get a consistent 18mpg now driving easy. Goes down quick when you put your foot in it.

 

I spent over 40years in the car business, mostly Chevrolet, after awhile you begin to see a pattern, I have never sold a Corvette, new or used to anyone that starts with ( what kind of gas Mileage dose it get ) I have learned not to pre judge customers, but this is a dead giveaway, if gas mileage is important to you, this probably not the car for you. If they buy the car, it comes back in a year.

Exactly my point. I use this truck as my daily driver so putting 65 miles daily on it affects my wallet. Believe me if I had the means to have a daily driver and make the truck into an off roader I would, but I have to find a medium. I’ve owned enough Tacoma’s before this one, so you don’t have to tell me what is and isn’t for me.

 

It cracks me up that people don't care about gas milage "'cuz its a truck". Gas mileage affects range, and I have a whole lot more fun farther from a gas station than I do sitting at the pump. If I'm on fumes at 250 miles, I'm grumpy.

@repp089 I've been looking at this a lot lately for my own stuff. Basically, it comes down to a few things. If you're geared lower than it should be, you might gain some mpg on the highway by going to a taller tire (or, lose it if you're not). But, if you add heavier tires and heavier wheels, your milage will suffer, especially when it comes to accelerating. I would figure out what weight you've got on each wheel and try not to replace them with anything much heavier. Watch the load rating on the tires - E load ranges are going to especially heavy. Certain tire makes are also especially heavy. The BFG A/T KO2s are particularly so, while the Cooper AT3 4S's i'm looking that are relatively light.

 

I guess most of you already know this, but remember when you change tire size, or more precisely tire diameter, most MPG calculations are subject to adjustment due to rolling circumference difference. Your mileage, which I assume is used to calculate MPG will be off by factors related to circumference. Just so you take that into account before you compare your MPG before and after tire changes.

 

I've gotten probably 1-2 worse since doing 265/75/16 KO2s. You will notice better mileage with higher pressure, but it drives much better offroad with lower pressure.

I think I am getting used to the stock Good years after 8000 miles. I mean, third tier Chinese no name knock offs would be better, but at least I now know not to drive in the rain. Or mud. Or snow. Or any inclement weather for that matter.

Since the treads aren't going to last on them, at least I can replace them soon. Trying to think positive in 2020.

 

With the lift and tires, I lost 4-5 mpg

 

E rated 265/75/16 good year ultraterrain on 0mm offset methods. 1.5 to 2 mpg loss. Had stock on for about a month and enjoyed the higher mpg...but wanted to personalize to my taste. Fully loaded last week low of around 13.7 with strong head wind. Lighter load on way home and got around 16mpg. I'll live with that although I'm no longer commuting 5 days a week with around 100 miles per day round trip.

 

SR - got a dependable 20 mpg on stock steel wheels and tires. Upgraded to 235/85/16 E rated mud tires, got the same mileage. Added steel bumpers front and rear - now I get 19.7, no matter what. I don't think a winch will make any difference either.

 

Went from stock OR wheels (24lb) and tires (42lb) to SCS F5's (18lb) & 265/75/16 Ridge Grapplers (49lb) for +1 pound per corner; with a 2" lift I've seen maaaaybe a .5mpg loss. And that's without calculating for the larger tire size like @Jere mentioned
