I need to ship my truck from Maryland to Los Angeles California around February next year. Looking for recommendations and costs. Also need to know if there’s anything I need to do/avoid in the process. This is my first time doing this! Thanks for any info!

Why not drive it yourself? Make a trip out of it.

When I was a kid I went to school out on the east coast and used to drive a car back at the end of the school year for a company that transported vehicles. I got paid for my gas and any tolls, so it was a free trip home for me. The owner got his car transported a lot cheaper than having it shipped. Although I haven't looked it up, I'm sure there are similar services available today unless COVID has interfered.

I've shipped 2 cars from NJ to UT with drastically different experiences.

First was using a company called Montway. It was one of the more expensive options at the time, but the showed up when scheduled and delivered the car ahead of schedule. Totally a positive experience. I think it was around $1,800 for these guys.

Second was using the cheapest option on uShip.com. And let's just say - you get what you pay for... So beware of the cheapest option and read some reviews.

Thanks, I’m assuming since your recommending him everything went well with the transport?

I’ve used Uship a few times and ended up taking Montway’s bids each time. I’ve been happy with Montway too. It was a couple grand coast to coast. Not sure if prices have changed in the past couple years.

I should note that the drivers seemed to be contractors for Montway.

Montway SUCKS. Scheduled 2 months prior to pickup. The day before my move across country they informed me they were still waiting on a driver. I was 10 min from I-10 so thier excuse didnt cut it. Wound up driving it 2300 miles last minute. Would NOT reccomend.

Wow, that SUCKS! This is why I mentioned that Montway uses contractors, you are still at their mercy. I have had several good experiences, but in the end it is not just up to Montway to do things right.

U ship is just an auction site. You enter the job details and companies bid on it.

Correct i went with an outdoor transport all went well. I used Uship and all they are is a middle man to a middle man. This is the driver that came and picked it up and dropped it off. All worked perfect no issues. I keep these guys numbers in my phone for future use.

If you have someone drive it for you, make sure he doesn't pick up any riders....

Heck, depending on the dates in February, I'd be willing to drive it out for you; just reimburse me for gas. I have family in SoCal and visit quarterly. In fact, I'm flying out to SoCal next week and will probably be driving a vehicle back to NC. PM me if you're interested.

Car shipping world is the sleaziest of the sleazy. You won't deal with the guy driving the truck. You deal with a broker. The broker will tell you a price that is a pie in the sky price just to get your business. They then post the opportunity on a national board that drivers bid on. The broker then selects them and transacts the deal. You hope the driver is legit and runs on schedule. They don't give you exact times because it is a fluid business. Guy will tell you he is leaving Md and will be in Ca in 3 days but he could get a pick up in Miami going to Iowa and your truck will go for a ride. He could also find a better deal in Houston that fills his truck and drop your car off for someone else and your truck will sit until someone else picks it up. The plus side is you are going from major city to major city.

I think uship is use by the shipping wars tv show. Maybe Jennifer will ship your truck?
