Mad respect for wives that hunt. My wife loves to shoot...just not at woodland creatures. When my son’s and I go hunting...she prays for the animals. After 5 long years with no success I kindly asked her to stop. She said “Fine!” “Just make sure it’s wrapped in white paper when you bring it home.” Hahaha square trade I would reckon. Congratulations everyone!

This deer my wife shot yesterday was a big bodied deer. We’ve been getting pictures of him since July. He just started showing up in daytime the last week. She shot him with her muzzle loader at 118 yards.

    What did he use?
I think everyone should be including info about your weapon of choice when you post your pics.

    I’m guessing ( probably wrong ) a 30-30 marlin?

    congrats
    Proud moment

Morning all. Sad morning, my good friend and coworker's Dad passed last night. Tested positive for the Covid about 3 weeks ago. My friend is taking this hard, him and his Dad were very tight, like I am with my Dad. Numbers are rising again in Pa. Be safe everyone and take precautions!

I’m eating smoke soup this morning. The blind my son missed two out of Monday, my wife killed one out of yesterday afternoon, I missed a decent 8 out of it this morning. I’ll try again this afternoon.

Always an ethical call. I dont judge either way. I once shot a buck that looked...off...a little weird... thru the scope.
Not a lot of time since he was about to make a move off the mesa and be gone.
When I got up to him I saw what his problem was.
Someone had shot half his neck off.
    Meat was ruined.
I took the antlers and tagged him with my tag.
Bummer was it was in an x zone and only one tag per hunter but I felt it was the right thing to do.

You pretty much just described a half a dozen "I must have missed him even tho the shot felt good" stories I heard this year.
Some with the exact same outcome as yours.

Two guys I know personally went back and looked again after I told them my copper bullet story from this season....

Couldnt keep up with my buck as he escaped uphill so I went way around up top where he was heading and snuck out above him and caught him at 60yds.
Straight downhill shot, dead center heart shot, felt good, he did the death run straight down like they do....
I slide down to poi, no blood, follow his jump marks down, down, down, no blood, hit an old road and...no sign on the downhill side, odd, they always just keep bailing down till they expire but I can see for a ways and no sign, no blood, no buck laying anywhere down there,,,happen to notice fresh sign along the old road uphill, no way that could be him but it had to be, followed the sign along the road 100 more yds or so, no blood, it leveled out and around the corner there he was piled up.

I could have easily lost that buck and figured well, I guess I somehow missed that gimme chip shot????
(Except I would have gone back to camp and got my dog so no, I wouldnt have lost that buck)
But I could have easily followed my instincts and years of recoveries and continued downhill and missed him the first time.
I have a couple of guys kicking themselves for not trying harder because they were good blacktails and theyre used to the lethality of crack boom down he goes.

This is our second year of copper and I passed last year so my 1st experience with copper.
Its focus on double lung and treat every rifle kill as an archery recovery for me from now on!!!

    Nice bucks.
Congrats to your wife and same to everyone else posting up!

    Keep em coming

If you dont mind, Im gonna share your story with the others from this year with a couple of guys whos big "effort" was "well I walked over to where he was standing and there was no blood and I saw him go over the ridge so I guess I missed even tho the shot felt good and theres "no way" I missed"

Maybe theyll put a little more effort into it next season like you did.
You did the best you could do, that whitethorn is a bitch and its tough recovering sometimes without a good tracking dog.

Tl;dr Found some bucks for my wife, missed our chance at the bigger one, Never shot on the small one. Got access on more land with even more deer. Hitting it hard this weekend.

I never reported back what happened of the weekend. Friday night I was able to fill my doe tag with my wife and daughter. Was a fun time even though the deer didn't come out till the last minute of shooting light. Stayed home halloween and relaxed, Sunday I left early for my spot close to town and my wife rolled over in bed and said if I find a decent one to call her and she would come shoot it. Well I found about 70 deer, 6 bucks. Only one "nice" one. The rest were pretty young. One was a skinny but tall 3x4. The big buck later bedded down on the neighboring property, which happened to be my Matco Dealers place lol. I watched him for a couple minutes before I moved glassing knobs. When I got to my second point I found a bachelor group of bucks moving my way. They jumped the fence and I almost talked myself into shooting one. But I texted a friend and he talked me out of it. Rightfully so. I bed the bucks around 10 am and continue to glass for a few more hours before I was going to head home for the day. My wife texts me and asked if I had anything pinned down for her and I figured she'd like to shoot the 3x4 for her first buck. So 45 minutes later she's climbing the butte to meet me and we circle around make a picture perfect stalk yada yada yada. Get set up at 160 yards and start looking for the buck she wants to shoot. There's 4 other bucks in the group. 2x3 and the rest forks. When we peak around the rocks we were using for cover we find the 3x4 bedded on the other side of the fence. He moved by the time we got to them. She decided she wanted to shoot one of the bigger forkys. Her mindset was that she wanted to fill her tag on a nice sunny day before the snow and cold sets in lol. She gets set up and we wait for a broadside shot that never happened. He spooked and jumped the fence. That was the end of that. We packed up and hiked out of there. Wind was getting all shifty anyway. My Matco guy comes Tuesdays and yesterday I asked him if I could hunt there and he said, "Why didn't you just smoke him first then call me? Theres tons of deer in that drainage anyway. Go ahead. Maybe I'll see you saturday!" So now its on. I have some house stuff to finish early friday morning. Then hunt all day friday, sat and sunday. My mom (babysitter) leaves for california for the year on the 13th so now's the time to get my wifes tag filled.
