Sorry if this is a dumb / obvious question, but I did search and wasn't really able to find anything that really answered my question.

I am looking to buy my first Tacoma and on somewhat of a budget (< 18k or so). My question is is there any frame difference between the base model tacomas and the SR5 or TRD? The reason I ask is, if I get into a base model and decide in a year or so I want to upgrade suspension etc is having the base model going to have any restrictions that won't allow me to do this?

And I guess somewhat related. Is there anything that you guys would absolutely miss that isn't available in a base model 4x4 other than the locking rear?

Just want to be sure I'm getting into something that I won't regret later so thanks for your input!

Frames are the same on a particular model year across chassis. IOW, an Access Cab SR has the same frame as an Access Cab TRD Offroad. You are smart for buying a lower trim and building it up.

I bought a TRD OR solely because it was the first Access Cab stick shift truck that I came across that had sufficiently low enough miles when I was looking. At the time it took a few months to find it. I'm actually building mine down so to speak, removing junk I didn't need to the point that the only thing that will really make it still a TRD is I'm keeping the factory locker.

If I was buying new I'd get the lowest spec that met my budget and needs and add Air Lockers if it came down to that. In fact looking back that's what I should have done at the time, gotten a new 2015 SR or SR5 manual and built it up rather than getting a used TRD OR. But live and learn.

@DaveInDenver Dave I am at a crossroads in regards to getting a new truck or suv. Due to some issues on the my 06 TRD OR (i inherited it) I need to start looking at a much newer model. Now that I drive a Taco, I love it. I'm a mom, and it works out fine. In your experiences, should I buy brand new? I do not do off roading, : ) but I want a "better ride." Which model do you suggest? Thank you kindly.

The reason I considered new is just that used Tacomas can be expensive. I still spent less than new, just not as much as I'd hoped.

I'd think the SR5 would be the one you'd want. Not a stripped truck but won't have the off highway stuff you probably don't need anyway.

I was wondering why cbi sliders don’t fit on 4 cylinder Tacoma’s. I have a six lug and it seems to be the same except motor size

I agree. The SR5 and the tow package are desirable. Power windows, mirrors, cruise control, lumbar etc. really too expensive to add after the fact and really add to driving pleasure. Try rolling down the passenger window while you’re driving on the base model.
