Nope. Dealership tried putting the hard sale on me this month to trade my 18 for a 21. I just said "no cubby, no thanks.":cookiemonster:

Cost. I'm betting that eliminating the cubby saves 3-5 mil per annum, (assuming a factory cost of 10-20 bucks per unit) and it's a feature that the average buyer won't notice.

If you think about it, all those new safety features starting in 2018 are hella expensive. Carplay too. They have to offset some of that so that the consumer doesn't see total sticker shock from 17 to beyond.

I'd sell it and buy a used 2017, or maybe a Kia. Really. Get a saw and get inventive. The cubby will come back in 2023!

Ask Toyota not some forum member in TW. I’m pretty sure Toyota didn’t say; “let’s get rid of the driver’s side cubby for absolutely no reason just to piss off TW members”.

Its true - it wasn't put back on. Only on the right side. You have to buy it as an extra.

Hoping they removed it because they needed the space for the new diesel option they will be offering. Maybe lift pump? A man can dream.

So, what is behind that space on the right side? Can I cut into the bed and make my own?

The problem is that the space behind the cubbies (both sides) is open to the pavement. This means that water, dust, mud, and other debris is kicked up into there, and, unless the cubbies are really well sealed, anything stored in them gets wet and dirty.

Besides cost, I think the sealing problem is what prompted Toyota to get rid of the driver's side cubby. They would have deleted the passenger's side too, except that the 110 volt outlet is located there. (The 110 volt outlet is not very useful either, but at least it's a nominal selling point.)

I considered adding the driver's side cubby to mine, but thought better of it as I became more familiar with the truck.

I find those cubbies useless anyway. I mean, yes, I have stuff in them, but only because I had space to fill. I could relocate the 2 bungee cords and the 4"x4"x4" wood block...

I love the storage compartments, there is a kit available to seal it if you are worried about the contents getting wet but l just put stuff in large Ziploc bags.
