Hi guys, I need a little advice please. While driving my 06 Tacoma at slower speeds, I started to smell something burning and realized it was coming from my front wheel. The calipers, that were replaced less than a year ago, reman, had a seized piston. I was able to get them replaced under warranty for free, and while doing the brake job, I applied the e-brake. After I finished, I released the brake and the truck would not move forward. I was able to travel in reverse and get them free and just took the drums off to take a look. One side is extremely rusty, but the ebrake seemed to be free. The shoes were worn and need replaced. I then took off the passenger drum and was shocked to see that everything looked new inside. Shoes are not worn, no dust and paint still on the hardware with zero rust. It doesn't look "wet" but definitely appears to have some sort of leak. The axle seal was already replaced by the dealer twice on this side, but there is no moisture on the inside of the axle.

    1. Does this sound more like a leaking wheel cylinder than an axle seal?

    2. Where else should I check to fix the e-brake. Should I assume this is a cable issue instead of an issue with the hardware?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Not sure about the wet part, if it was brake fluid you could smell or feel it (not really slippery like oil), you would have spongy brake peddle, loss of brake fluid.

If it was axle same on smell & feel (very slippery and stinks), check fluid level in axle.

Clean inside of drum & shoes with brake clean and see if the wet comes back.

Brake cables come into the cab under the center console, remove the storage bin and you should be able to see the cables move

Thanks sparystaco. I spent the evening reading up on Tacomaworld about both issues, the seal and the wheel cylinder. I didn't notice that gear oil smell so now I'm thinking that the issue is the wheel cylinder. I stuck the wheels back on last night so it wasn't sitting on my jack/jackstands overnight and will take a look at the wheel cylinders in a bit and see if there is moisture behind the boot. I am still shocked at how different each side looked. I will take a pic of the the drivers side "parts" since I already tore it apart, but the passenger side is still together. I'll post a pic of that too. I know I pulled the passenger side apart last year to check that everything was good. I guess my lesson here is to always pull both drums and check both sides.
