I am adding an aluminum roof rack to my truck and want to eventually put a dual band antenna on the top of the vehicle. I have a couple of questions about how to get a good ground plane for the antenna:

    1. If I put the antenna above the cab, does it need to physically touch the roof or would it be adequate to have it mounted to the roof rack slightly above the roof?
    2. Would putting a sheet of expanded metal (could fit 5'x4')on the roof rack and placing the antenna in the middle of that be a better alternative than on/above the cab?
