So this happened within the last 3 months on my 2018 MGM (truck was purchased new):
    NU63UBshKI8i5SRpViT8JSdSHkP2CNHvglqvfXPb_8386f001c33edc00862a22e663add6757b88fc85.jpg
    qAuMqT5C_S6JfKC7HL7i5IwPc3PAlyfVFDWRa7vj_253ab84ba3e368263ae53f4d6b8d82e0b2139ba3.jpg

I have been hand washing the truck from day one every 8-16 weeks. No gnarly detergents. It's been through the gas station wash maybe 3 times in the 2 years. Wax only applied once last year. Parked outside all the time in Socal, so it's UV damage to the clear coat (I assume ??). August, when I last washed it, I didn't see this so it must have happened all at once exponentially or something??

I'm gonna say it's good old infamous shitty toyota paint quality. I'm not saying parking outside helps but there is no way a 2018 car will see this level of fade , even with total neglect. There is no way I can be convinced otherwise, as I have owned over a dozen cars in my life and even with absolute minimal paint care this has never happened.

Also I'm not gonna even bother with toyota because it's gonna probably be he said she said BS only to have a simple sand/clear coat applied at at body shop and probably months later. Truck is 2 years only with 50k+ miles (so no bumper to bumper). Just wanted to see if any other 3rd gens have seen this level of fade or if my truck just got the shit end of the stick :(
I constantly see 2ed gens with the same issue...

I'm probably gonna wet sand 1500 followed by 3000 grit. If base looks cool then I will apply like a million thin coats of 2K clear coat (spray can) with a final sanding/buff.

 Maybe a good time to get a roof rack in order to "protect" the paint lol.

Wow! Haven’t seen mgm do this. Gotta take it to the dealer and get them involved

I don't have any specific advice for you, but holy hell!

That amount of damage to the paint is certainly not normal! I recently bought my tacoma so I don't have that as a reference but I traded in a 2015 camry in a dark grey and it had no signs of paint damage like that despite being park outside 24/7 for 5 years straight. Never really did anything to protect the paint on the camry either, I probably washed it MAYBE once a year (not kidding).

Was likely damaged and repaired after the dealer took delivery. If a body shop used cheap cleat coat that can happen but I have never seen it from any factory paint. Creds: collision estimator.

This is why I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer and battle only to have them "fix" it . It would probably be a huge time saver if I simply sand/apply 2k clear coat/buff. It's also the roof so I'm not too worried about perfection. The rest of the paint has seen a lot of off road dirt / bushes / rocks so it's not like a showroom finish.

Searching around I see some blue 3rd gens supposedly with pain issues as well? thought it was a 2ed gen thing but maybe not?

If your not too worried about it, wet sand smooth, buff, then put black vinyl over the whole roof.

Without the vinyl, its going to look just like this again within a year.

It was a run of blazing blue pearl from Baja that had factory defective paint. They we're either repairing and in some cases buying back.

Wow that’s really bad. The paint quality is definitely a disappointment on these trucks but that’s on another level.

Common problem with magnetic paints. I always request the non-magnetic versions.

I treat my mgm pretty rough park outside, wheel, camping, etc. also 2018. And mine does not look this way. Someone mentioned it may have been repainted, that’s prob a good guess that or defect paint

my MGM has 6 straight years in California sun with no paint issues at all except for pinstripes and stuff I've caused. it goes through car washes, snow, desert etc and never waxed.

looks to me like the roof was resprayed and possibly never had a clear coat reapplied. some states only allow a water based paint now which makes the clear coat crucial (2 stage pain job)
Super white ones struggle because they are single stage (no clear coat)

    I'd take it back
