Hello, I'm new to this forum, after doing a lot of reading online this week I kept coming across tacomaworld threads so decided to join you all. I have started my build on a 2012 tacoma sport 4L v6 MT. I am trying to decide weather to re gear my truck and what gears I would want to go with, I am running 33 inch tires and want a capable over land rig but it will sometimes be used as a DD and driven in winter conditions. Today I lifted one rear wheel and did a driveline rotation test, unexpectedly it was 1.8 rotations of the driveshaft to 1 whole rotation of the tire (1.8 to 1). Can any one confirm that this is the stock gear ration I'm these rear ends?

Just an FYI, if you only have one tire off the ground, you need to do one of two things. First, double the amount of driveshaft rotations you obtained for one tire rotation. Or more accurately, spin the tire twice and see how many times your driveshaft spins.

I don't know what the stock gear ratio is for your truck, but I would guess it's somewhere around the 3.6:1 you calculated.

You have stock 3.73 gears. I have a 4.0 v6 6spd and I'm running 4.10s. If you're planning on using it on the hwy and not going bigger than 33s, I would stick with 4.10s or 4.30s to keep the revs down. I have stock 265/65/17 tires for reference and at 70mph I am turning around 2700rpms

If you have the 4.0 and a 6 speed I believe the stock gears are 4.11, while the auto had 3.73s. I have had both- actually preferred the 3.73, but I’m not off road a lot

All 6 lug 05-15 v6 trucks had 3.73s. Only the 6 lug 4 banger trucks came with 4.10s

OP a lot of people don't bother regearing for 33s because the change in ratio is so small for such a large amount of money. As stated above, you'd want 4.10 or maybe 4.30 but definitely no lower than that.

Playing with this calculator, it appears 4.10 and 33s would put you back at stock. If you have any extra weight from armor or whatnot, then I'd go 4.30 to give it a little extra umph.

From personal experience I can tell you just stick with the stock ratio 3.73

if you don’t intend to go larger than 33’s you be just fine.

I am happy to be corrected, but my auto trans in the 08 4runner sure feels like it is geared differently than my 6 speed 06 Tacoma. Same wheel and tire setup.

edit: are the off road model gears 4.1 stock?

That may be because the transmissions themselves are geared differently. To answer your edit, no. All 2005-2015 V6 tacomas have 3.73 gearing.

Probably different gearing in the transmission its self (?)

Thank you, this clears up my confusion. 3.73 gearing sounds right

That's the thing, it doesn't feel over geared as it is with stock gears on 33's. Not sure it's worth the $2k plus to change it that little bit, I'm sure it would be nice sometimes to have that low first and reverse but there is 4 lo for that.. on the highway I use all 6 gears in happy rev ranges

It’s totally not worth the money unless you were doing a ARB locker set up at the same time.

I've searched this a lot due to my weak little underpowered 2.7 auto. 4X4. From what I've found a Tacoma with a MT W/OD will turn appx. 250 rpm more, @ 60mph., than that same Taco with an auto W/OD. Very aggravating Toyota uses the same gear ratio for both MT & auto. My 2.7 "auto" 4X4 W/4.10 gears runs 1799 rpm @ 60mph. & really weak & sluggish feeling. That same Taco W/MT will be running 2056 rpm. @ 60mph. If I change my Taco W/auto to a 4.56 gear it will then run 2001 rpm @ 60 mph., still higher (55 rpm less) than the MT with the 4.10. Doesn't make sense if Toyota thinks a Taco W/MT needs to run 2050 rpm @ 60 mph. they should know the auto @ 1799 is going to be weak. I've been running my 2.7 auto in 3 instead of D, appx. 2650 rpm. @ 60 mph., makes it a lot more comfortable to dr. When rarely on interstate, 75+ mph. D works reasonably well. Also I figure my fuel mileage at each fuel up & have seen no decrease in mileage running in 3. In D at 60 mph. engine is straining all the time, in 3 it seems to be just loafing along.

What kind of MPG do you get with the 4 banger?

I just went out & looked bact thru my log book. Seems like was roughly 17 to 18 1/2 back when driving in D all the time. Since I've been driving in 3 nearer 17 1/2 to 19. IT actually hit 20 back in Sept. but a buddy was driving it, It's never done that with me driving it.

As others have mentioned you should be ok with the stock 3.73 gears and the 6-speed. I’m on 33’s regeared to 4.56/lockers with a 6-speed but I have armor and other stuff that makes my truck heavy and not very aerodynamic. The highway revs are about 2800 @ 70mph but I’ll gladly sacrifice that for better drivability and off-road performance. 4lo in 1st gear is tractor slow :D

It all depends on what your intended purpose is and what you’re willing to live with. Mine is not daily driven anymore and lots of other reasons to regear, so I did and got Harrop e-lockers at the same time. Buy once, cry once.

does anyone know if every "8.4" rear diff is the same
ECGS website seems to suggest yes

    regarding core compatibility, 05-15

from what I understand, there are only two choices. 8" elocker/ELD, or "8.4" that looks different and does not have elocker
with the available ratios being as follows:
    -V6, 3.73 stock, it's either 8" or 8.4" depending on truck. 6-lug.
-4cyl 4x4 manual, only one that came with 4.10. If it's OR with visible elocker, then 8". If not, 8.4. Supposedly 6-lug
-this the one I'm concerned about. Tiny cheap little gardener trucks without fender flares, front bench seat, probably 4cyl. I don't know if their whole axle is narrower. It's SUA instead of SOA.
and is 5-lug instead of 6-lug.

I have a core from exactly that with the intent to use as a core/spare for regear
from a gardener truck, build it, and swap it into my 4x4 that is not a gardener truck.
I *believe* this will work. That they are both 8.4.
That all I have to do is choose what to put in there (ie locker) and what ratio for the Tacoma.

Hoping there is no weird surprise shit of "oh no those have different internal dimensions"
specifically, the third member. Not the whole housing.

Read the last paragraph of the first post, it says they’re the same. I just did a cursory search but I think you’ll be in the clear.
