Toyota dealer has covered my first 6 oil changes on my 2017 tacoma 4cylinder. I was shocked yesterday when I had to pay 90 bucks for my first paid oil change. The rep said it was because its almost 7 quarts and he showed me the printed spec sheet showing 6.2 quarts. I googled this and found that the 2.7L takes 5.1 quarts and 6cylinder takes 6.2 quarts. Can anyone verify this?

your user manual can confirm the amount. It should list both engines

Check the owners manual for capacity. But it should be around 6 quarts for the 2.7. That's what I remember from my 1st 2 Tacos.

And if they put 0/20 in it...that's actually not a bad price for the dealer. A synthetic OC at most quick lube places will run you $75+.

6.2 is what goes into my V6. You'd have to check the owner's manual for the 4 cylinder to be sure.

learn to do the maintenance yourself - the dealer WANTS YOUR MONEY! Do it yourself and you will know it is done right, the first time.

You don't even need to have ramps to change the oil in the taco if you're not supersized. Easy peasy.

Definitely. I been doing my own oil changes in vehicles since i had my first. It's one thing I asked my dad to do with me so I'd learn.
You can get a Toyota filter at walmart for $7.00 and your pick of oil from supertech to mobile one at decent prices.
Also look for sales. A few months ago advance auto was cleaning out Shell Rotella gas truck 0w20 quarts for $2.49 each. I squirrelled away enough for a few oil changes. Find deals like that and cut the cost even more.

While doing your own oil changes is great....I do my own, not everyone can.

Some don't have the time, some don't have the allowable space (apartments, townhomes, HOA restrictions, etc.), some don't have the tools, some have physical hurdles that prevent them (disability, age, etc.) and some simply don't know how to do.....and there's nothing wrong with that.

What may seem like a normal Saturday morning activity for some of us is not so easy for others. Let's not forget that.

~25 dollars for good oil and oem filter/washers. scam for a couple bolts.

90-25 = 65 dollars to spend on tools

I've gotten so many 'free' tools from car/house repairs

Every now and then I like having the pros do it anyway because they'll also look at other things I neglect while I'm down there. But, now that I'm in an apartment, I pretty much have to shell out for the pros anyway.

completely understand the dealer option for those who don't have a driveway or garage to work from. I'd look to friends who may have those and would be willing to let you use - six pack of beer seems to be a good method to entice. I do this for those I know - and also transmission flush / tire rotations. So far the extension to assist has not been abused and is appreciated.

Not having tools is not hard to overcome, Amazon sells tools, ramps and drain pans delivered to your door. Harbor Freight and Walmart sell them too. Not knowing how, well ask a friend or family member that's handy to show you and watch some YouTube videos.
Community and HOa restrictions, I lived in a trailer park years ago that prohibited working on cars. I did it anyway. The owner came by when i was doing a brake job. I was expecting to be in some trouble but no. He just said I don't care what you do just have it road ready by sunset. Most of those rules are so people don't have project cars outside on Jackstands for days weeks and months. I would never live under an HOA that is that picky you can't do simply maintenance either especially if it's in your garage.
Asking to use a friend or relatives garage or driveway can work out too I've done it a few times.
An oil change isn't hard of a task to learn.
Disabilities and age I understand and not having time also because of work sure.

I do a lot of "charity changes" for people. Bring me your oil/filter of choice and I'll do the work. In some cases I'll buy the oil/filter for them and get reimbursed. And in a few cases I'll donate my own oil and/or purchase the oil/filter for them.

I have lots of friends, family and neighbors who appreciate the help. Every one of them has some hurdle that prevents them from doing their own OCs. A couple of them are single moms and just need helping hand.

Plus I don't trust quick lube joints.....although Valvoline isn't too bad. So I extend the help to them.

That's very nice indeed. I totally agree quick lube shops are often bad. The one time I thought a coupon deal might save me time and money they proved me wrong by messing up the oil pan in a car. DIY and independent mechanic has worked best for me.
