Hey guys. So I’m new to this forum. I recently just bought a 2012 prerunner with a 2.7L 4 cyl. I got this truck due to the fact I wasn’t planning on doing any towing. However, recently I just bought a wakeboarding boat weighing a total of 3,250 with the trailer. Do any of you have any experience towing something similar with a 4cyl Tacoma? And what are your thoughts about backing it up and down the boat ramp? I guess what I’m trying to say, is can this be done? Or am I completely screwed. Help!!!! Thanks guys.

What is the truck rated to tow?

3500 pounds. But I’ll be pulling it about 230 miles on a trip next weekend and want to make sure I don’t blow the tranny,

Do you have a tow package? Also, I would spend $30 and get TorquePro and a bluetooth dongle to monitor the trans temps. That is what I have and love it

@Cnasianfire i didn’t know the 4cyl was capable of a tow package. I’ll definitely look into the torquepro and a Bluetooth dongle. Do you have any specifics you recommend?

I definitely could be wrong!!! It may not have a tire package.

My 2015 2.7L 5 speed had a “Port installed” hitch and 4 pole wiring. The hitch appears to be the exact one used on 6cyl tow packages.

The 4 bangers never came with a tow package. You could get a dealer installed class 3 hitch I believe.
    Manual or automatic?
I’ve towed that much weight with my 2.7. Hope you aren’t in a hurry. It’ll do it, just take it slow. And I would NOT tow that much without a brake controller and trailer brakes.

I was going to say when you are going to pull it out of the water put it in 4low for the extra torque. But you have a prerunner..

@ryfox0276 i May just have to tow it slow. I wasn’t planning on towing at all when i bought it. But now I have no choice as I recently bought the truck and can’t really get into a bigger truck at this point. Pretty frustrating.

Mine is the same as my brothers 4.0 Sport with tow package. It’s just the hitch and wiring with 4 pole plug though. No oil cooler etc.

@Nessmuk i have a similar hitch. Just need to do the wiring. Did you do the wiring yourself?

No, it was already installed. The "tow package" was on the window sticker. If I remember correctly it was $400 or $450.
I never plan on towing anything that needs a 7 pole connector so it worked for me.
I had never seen a 2.7 5sp with a port installed hitch before.

Ur seriously pushing it. Ur brakes will just push you if you need to stop in a hurry. Add the largest transmission cooler you can stuff behind that grill. Get a ultra gauge or scan gauge on temp probe inline of cooler. You MUST monitor this. Hit 200 and I’d be pulling over. Flatlander? On hills? Another huge question to ask. Truck will be gutless going up hill no speed.
