Hello, I've done some research on winters in Portland area and it seems that they don't typically get that harsh. I just moved here this summer and have never driven in cold weather conditions (California native) and I think I'm just gonna go this winter with the stock M-S rated Firestone LE2's on my 2017 2WD SR5.
I don't really want to spend over $160/tire right now and I don't think I need dedicated winter tires. Does anyone think this is a big risk?
From what I understand, it typically only gets really bad one week a year and when that happens, everything shuts down. I'm gonna get a set of chains for my rear wheels as well as sandbags for the bed. Does anyone have any input on icy road conditions here as well?

When its bad just stay out of ruts and put some weight in the back, consider lowering tire pressures to 25psi as well.

Orrrrr you could buy some 4 season tires like the wildpeaks or coopers :D

You’ll be fine. It might snow once or twice a year and the whole city shuts down for a day or two until it switches back to rain and melts.

You don’t really need to worry about snow driving in Portland. Everyone just stays home.

I have snows and 4wd because I go to the mountain to ski every weekend and I still stay off the roads when it snows in town because I don’t need to get rear ended. Portland drivers are a special flavor of bad but that’s a whole different story.

I live close to Eugene, and yeah, the weather is snowy only few times a winter. My everyday pickup is a 2wd Ranger, and even in the higher elevation I live at, couple sand bags, and driving cautious, I get around ok. Taking off uphill on slick pavement can be tricky for 2wd, so if the weather does turn sour, give some thought about taking a route that is flat as possible.

You may not get much snow but it’s frost, black ice on bridge decks, corners that you have to watch for. Just take it easy, for sure weight over the rear axle. I like the suggestion about thinking ahead about your route.

Just put 2 sand bags over each rear wheel, did that many times with 2X trucks. In PDX it's the black ice on bridges and overpasses that gets you.
