I popped off the lower center consul to access the lighters down there. The harnesses to the lighters have three wires. Two are white and black on one side which I believe are the 12 V power and a red and black striped one that I believe to be the ground. I was hoping to simply unplug them and pop them onto the USB but that does not look possible as the back of the USB has larger spade connectors. Any assistance?

Should I simply cut the wires and crimp on new connectors or should I dremel a little of the spade on the negative of the usb? I was thinking of simply cutting the OEM connector down the middle and plugging those right onto the USB itself. It would reduce splicing and crimping on my end

You might really want to break out your Meter and double check things unless your colors got transposed when typing.

I have never known Toyota to use Red/black as a ground wire

Myself I would make an adapter harness unless you never plan to go back to the stock plugs

The two white/ black go to the “12v” marking on the cig lighter when plugged in. That spade is normal size on the lighter. The red/black goes to the unmarked spade which is skinnier on the lighter.

Both OEM lighters work as designed. Or should I say “12v adapters”.

anyhow I figured it would be easy to just swap them out.

I took apart the plastic on one of the OEM connectors. I took the bare spade females and plugged them back into the OEM power source and they still work. Plugged them into the usb and they don’t work. Now I’m lost. I figured it would be just as easy as unplugging and plugging in the new one but I guess not

I ended up making an adapter with a male spade that fit into the stock plug and female spade that fit over the Blue Seas USB. I was unable to get the stock cig lighter adapter out of the plastic to install and gave up after only a few minutes.

Any tips or pics on how you were able to get the lighter socket out?

@hogeyphenogey Toyota uses white w/black stripe as a common ground wire. due to how the outlets are wired (only work with ACC/ON) one wire should run to the ignition "hot" to cut power when you turn off the key.

So I did this a year or so ago. Here's what I did on my 98. I tested the wires to get positive and negative, cut the factory plugs off and crimped on spade connectors, drilling the factory holes out to the 1 1/8th needed and then installed everything as normal.
    0621191319.jpg
Replaced both lower 12vs with blue sea 12v and dual USB.
    0621191329.jpg
    Factory plug
    0621191333.jpg
    Ends Removed.
IIRC The White with a black stripe is Negative, and Red was Positive.
    0621191339.jpg
    All plugged in.
    0621191343.jpg
    All Buttoned up and functioning.
Since this install I swapped the 12v for a Voltage gauge just because I never use 12v outlets anymore.

    Hope this Helps!

All I did was look at the OEM spade connectors. One was gold, the other silver. The back of the usb was one gold one silver. Plugged them in and VOILA! USB power!! So glad I did this today!

and all I did was remove the gray plastic from the OEM connectors in that “L” shape, put shrink wrap around the bare spade connectors and snapped them on. No cutting, crimping or splicing.

I used the two power sources down low. I had to cut off the side tabs on them on the backside to pop them out the front. I haven’t done the actual lighter yet. Saving that for something else. I will probably keep it for a 12v power source.

If you still need a wiring diagram for the cigarette lighter port PM me tomorrow. I did mine last year using this USB charger.

I’m good- looking back through trial and error- it’s really simple. I used the OEM wiring and connectors and it was about 1/2 an hour of actual real work- I turned it into much more than it should’ve been.

Hi, know it's been many years, but do you still have the wiring diagram for the cigarette lighter? Mine stopped working (1997 Tacoma, X-cab) and I want to put a 12V socket in it's place.
