Hey everyone, I have a stupid question to ask (but I've been laughed at before, so no big deal)

I have a 98 4runner and it came with a set of skid plates that covered from the front of the truck to the front of the transfer case. I just picked up my new 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport and the only skid plate it has on it doesn't even cover the oil pan. Is this correct or do I need to go back to the dealer and ask them for the rest of my plates.

    Thanks

You have the splash guard, that’s all you get

Off road models have little more than splash guards as well. I mean they’d work, but be mangled after some scraping. I have TRD pro skid plate on mine, and it offers more protection, but I wouldn’t drag that across rocks much either as it would gull. Steel aftermarket if you plan to actually use them, but they add weight...

    I must admit, I don't understand Toyota's thinking sometimes.

Yea, I know. But my 98 runner has more protection than my 2020 Tacoma; it doesn't make sense to me

98 didn't have backup cameras, Bluetooth, power seats, parking assist, blind spot monitor, LEDs, heated seats, etc. You get the point

I do; and it's much more comfortable. But they market Tacomas as rugged off road beasts, but with no skid plates all your off road had better be grass fields or you might be in trouble. That's all I was getting at.

Really the offroads secondary plate doesn't do a whole lot. It just guards the oil pan a bit better and the front diff, but both are in no danger with typical offroading.

You're probably right. Most of the off raiding I do is either around our ranch or on forestry roads. I'm going to pick up a set of plates just to be on the safe side.

Toyota just respects the aftermarket industry. Allows everyone else to make some money selling the real off-roading stuff :D

Stock skids work for forest service roads and your average dirt road but if you’re planning on doing anything more extreme investing in some steel skids might be a good idea, I have RCI and I love them

Thank you. I just worry about stray rocks or roots that seem to jump up out of nowhere. The plates on my 4runner have enough dents and gouges on them that I think it would be a good investment. I'll check RCI out.

I swap the originals for the TRD skid plate..a little more protection and better way to change the oil filter
