Looks fancy! I’ve considered doing an in-line regulator to make it a bit simpler at the tire end. Does it slow down airing up at all since it’s regulated to tire psi instead of max performing the compressor?

 

That's a good question. Sorry, but I haven't timed airing-up for comparison.

I really like your air chuck coupler location. How about adding jumper cable lugs on the other side for balance?

 

Hmm, I like that idea. I do eventually plan on a front bumper and would like to use an Anderson plug for the winch so I could make it interchangeable with a set of jumper cables. So I could just run the cable for the Anderson plug now and be ready for a winch in the future.

What’d everybody using as far as fill up attachments? I’d prefer one that reads the pressure of the tire between actually filling with air but the cheap ones I’ve bought seem way off.

i picked up a

$172 smittybilt 2781 smittybilt AIR COMPRESSOR 5.65CFM - SB2781

smittybilt 2781 to mount under the hood and i will be keeping the factory switch assembly on the compressor

so the question is, since it has the built in switch and "circuit-breaker" already included, can't i just change out the alligator clips and wire it directly to the battery with no relay nor an additional circuit breaker?

 

I would still install a fuse/breaker near the battery end of the positive cable. A breaker at the compressor doesn’t protect the wire going to it.

 

yeah, good point, melty wires are no good. the max amperage on the compressor is 45A so i suppose a 50A fuse/breaker would be the size to use?

 

Yes but verify the wire gauge to be sure it’s sized properly. With a quality part I wouldn’t expect a problem but if you’re cutting off the clips you might as well look under the wire sleeves and see. There are several different charts that help you decide what’s best based on current and wire length and there’s some latitude depending on how much voltage drop you’re willing to accept. Voltage drop in the wire equates to loss of usable power long before it causes enough heating to melt the wire.

Edit- small iPhone image, sorry, you should be able to see the wire gauge embossed on the insulation since there isn’t any sleeve.

 

Anybody have an idea of what these connectors are called?

 

Molex uses pins, but its on the right track. I've never been able to find what those are called either.

 

I emailed ARB but never got a reply. All my searches elsewhere have turned up nothing.
